I just assumed it was because I had blocked the person or they had blocked me.

Not always. If you delete your own comment, you will see the same message where your comment was.

@FoxyGoddess It will just say 'This message was deleted.' when it's due to being blocked..

It won't mention who by like it does when the comment's author or the main poster has deleted it.
