Hand writing becoming ancient history

My boomer mother in law is one of the last examples left from the old world. Where school prioritized teaching kids to hand write. She writes poetry and grocery lists and notes all by hand. And is always in need of new ink pens.

For her birthday I'm getting her more ink pens, and never before has it been this hard to find a decent price for a couple blue ballpoint ink pens.

They are mainly found on scrapbooking sites like "CreativewithMia.com" where they take delivery charge double the price of the product.

I searched for around an hour scrolling scrolling reading typing scrolling. Until I found 1 product that had blue ink pens in a set of 10, with good hand grip in different colours and normal delivery costs. I snatched up the last one in layer.

(Ps. Not everyone online is from the US)

In England we still have some decent stationery shops which stock a reasonable selection of pens and ink etc - at reasonable prices. Amazon UK has a large selection of Parker pens (which is what I use)
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@ArtieKat I found them on amazon! Maybe from UK even who knows 🤔
ArtieKat · M
@Queendragonfly I'd rather support independent shops but, frequently, they just can't compete with Amazon.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@ArtieKat Nearest shop for me is just too far away. It's cheaper to order online and I must be cheap , I'm on low wage.

Do brick and mortar stores not sell these over there? I am thinking of stores that sell office supplies or back-to-school supplies.

Then again, I am also "old world." I only buy online as a last resort.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@DrWatson I worked as a substitute teacher for kids age 8-9 back in in 2009 and you know what they did instead of learning to write with pencils?

They just pressed random keys

Asgrykmnntrddxvnnlmlknnkkjgfsaaweetipnvcfetliiyfvbbnoourewwffhjjbceeesaafklllngrtfxxxvvvvvvgrweyolgsddsssssdbnnn

on the keyboard on the pc and then us teachers asked what it said and translated it to a story. Then we printed out these random letters next to the story that we wrote on the other page.

That was over ten years ago.

I know kindergarden kids 5 years ago uses electric tablets to paint and play on while in the daycare.

I know high school kids all have a school laptop.

Hand writing isn't in the education plan a anymore. It wouldn't suprise me if today's toddlers never will know how to hand write. Schools don't care. Parents don't have time or think it's important.

So again. We are 100% dependent on technology. It's terrifying.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@Queendragonfly That is amazing. I cannot imagine raising a generation that cannot write at all. Although I suppose, if a person learns to type and to read, then they can teach themselves to write. But that involves hand-eye coordination, and takes some practice.

I teach mathematics , and I see this when students try to sketch curves by hand nowadays. They all come out looking like straight lines.
@Queendragonfly And yet there are still parts of the world that have no electricity.
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
Long ago as a kid I stopped using cursive to write. I saw a friend writing using a print style and it was much easier to read, so I adopted it. I have never gone back to cursive.

I prefer word processors since I can edit. Also electronic communication is so much faster!
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@JoyfulSilence Ah now I understand what all you mean with print style. I thought it was something you printed out 😂

I never got to learn cursive because I was behind in other subjects that I had to prioritize so my teacher skipped cursives for me entirely.

So I write in print style.
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@Queendragonfly

Yeah, what mean by print style is like the letters you see on this screen.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@JoyfulSilence Yeah I figured! And I can't even read cursives so yes, normal writing /print is preferred 😂

You mean ink pens that you dip into an ink jar? Or does she use regular ink pens too? Walmart has PaperMate pens for the lowest prices Ive seen.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@Coralmist no sorry I mean ink pens like blue ink pens, ballpoint pens I think they named them
Coralmist · 41-45, F
Oh I just realized you may not have Walmart there? You could try Walmart.com..not sure shipping price.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@Coralmist Nope. I don't know what's the closest comparison to Walmart here. Maybe a big grocery store? But it's cheaper for me to order online as I live far away from the city
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Queendragonfly Do you have Target.? .similar to Walmart. But I find Walmarts prices a bit lower.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
Have you tried your local Newsagent?
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@Thevy29 local what?
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
@Queendragonfly Newsagent. Every town or Mall has one here. They sell Lotto, Magazines, cards, stationary etc. You don't have these where you live?
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@Thevy29 In the city yes but they might sell one type of pen, overpriced too.
You can buy them by the case at Sam's Club .. in blue or black.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@Stillwaiting Is Sam's Club in Sweden?
@DrWatson .. IDK .. just a statement that it is not the same everywhere. Maybe it would be better if Sweden did have a Sam's, if basic office supplies are not available.
ViciDraco · 41-45, M
I was forced to hand write (assuming you mean cursive) from grades 2 through 4 in a private school. Print writing was allowed in 5th grade when I swapped to public and I never went back. Having experience with both, I'm not surprised handwriting is dying. I've never really liked it.

But it is sad that the people who do like it are having difficulty finding quality products to support it. I will suggest maybe trying an art supply store in the future.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@ViciDraco I think she writes in cursive mixed with her own style she has developed over the years.

I get that it's losing it's fun if it was forced on you. Just like reading books. But I found my way back to it by choice later in life and now it's associated to freedom.

I do use notes on the phones more and more often though but I always wanna keep the pens and the physical note books around me. It just feels wrong not to.
ViciDraco · 41-45, M
@Queendragonfly I take physical notebooks with me all the time. I write by hand often. Though typically with mechanical pencil for my purposes. But I use print instead of cursive. It's always been easier for me to write and far easier for me to read back later. A personal taste thing, really.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@ViciDraco Seems to be a pattern of forced cursive writing from people age 40+ and up.

I never learned cursives so I've always written "normal" as I call it.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Gel pens are the best.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@Degbeme She hates them. She wants real old ball point ink.
Cursive writing .. Millenial kryptonite .. that, and stick shift cars.
@ViciDraco ... and there are similar comparisons of things unique to each generation. Sorta my point and sarcasm fully intended.
Most boomers have adapted to a lot of technological change in their lifetimes. The older ones far more change than your generation has faced yet. Sooo .... we don't see the value in mocking others for being more comfortable with what they grew up with .. just like your generation is.
ViciDraco · 41-45, M
@Stillwaiting The reference to shoeing horses was pointing to changing technology over generations, yes.

What sarcasm? Nothing you stated implied sarcasm. You made specifically mocking tones about things younger generations did not grow up with (though again, I did).

As far as living through more change, that's natural because boomers have lived longer. They have been there for every transition I have lived through and some time before it. That's how age and time work.
@ViciDraco There was more drastic change in technology in daily life during their first 35-40 years than during yours ..

I understand. I like to journal. I enjoy having nice pens. I have a small collection. They are not cheap either. They range from $75 to $300 each. Once you have the pen refills are readily available and cheap.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@Musicman I forgot to check if they had refills but they will last 2-3 years at least.
