WHY should I cut my hair?

I'm a 59 year old woman. I have hair that has no gray and is a little past my shoulders. Been trying to get it to grow for years, but it just doesn't. So several people recently asked me when I was going to cut my hair, because I am a women over 40. Who the hell makes these rules for women? I have my nose pierced, 25 tattoos, and I dress very trendy and act like I'm 25. Why do people expect us to get a certain age and start wearing polyester clothes, cut our hair, start hitting the seniors hangouts to play bingo? I don't get it. Do similar rules apply to middle aged men? Are there unwritten rules that they are expected to follow when they hit 40?
So I am interested in hearing from people to get your take on whether they believe women should cut their hair and dress a certain way after 40 ? I personally think it's stupid to expect that of us, but that's just my opinion.

I'll wear my hair down to my ass by age 80 if I want to. I don't give a f*** what people think.
Kudos to you for being yourself. I applaud that 👏

Don't do it! My wife was made to cut her hair when she was a young teenager but it was so slow growing that she almost never needed to even trim it for the next fifty years. It was something she regretted all her life.

Dress how you want to dress, have long or short hair as you like! There are no rules, just people who don't like to stand out of the crowd and think that no one else should either.

Two people whose sense of style I admire are Dame Helen Mirren and Dame Vivienne Westwood: "When in doubt dress up".

Here's Helen Mirren at 78

And Vivienne Westwood, at about 80 I think

I spent a lot of my life blending in but eventually decided to get more colourful and everyone likes it as far as I can tell. It is said that one should grow old gracefully; I'm going to grow old disgracefully!

Dressed for my COVID jab last week, I'm 67:

@ninalanyon you go!! You looked awesome for your jab!! I love that outfit! And I have admired those two women too!

@Mardrae Thank you. Going out to a flea market tomorrow so I'll have to spend a while deciding what to wear. It's getting cold here so thicker tights might be in order.
Lilymoon · F
Tell them to MYOB I'll never dress or act like an old lady even when I'm 80.
Mardrae · F
@Lilymoon I feel the same way!!!

I'm 56 with hair half way down my back and I dress how I want.

Ignore those who judge your dress sense, they are just jealous of strong women.
Mardrae · F
@AntisocialTroll I definitely think that's a big part of it. My 85 year old roommate is like that. When she rented a room from me last year, her daughter told me how excited she was to rent from someone older. You should have seen how she acted when she saw that I have hair past my shoulders, lots of tattoos, never wear a bra, etc. She is widowed like me and she was looking for someone to cry with about our dead husbands, someone to go to church with, etc. I ain't the one. I am not religious, I don't have kids, smoke pot, and I flirt with guys. Definitely the opposite of her. It pisses her off I think. She was one of the people who suggested I cut my hair.

@Mardrae By pure coincidence I just happened to read this and thought it might be of interest to you.

Yeah, it's pure horse puckey. You do you, and that's coming from a white old guy in his 70s.
Ontheroad · M
@Mardrae Yeah, some do seem to think it's what they are supposed to do... sad, and the older they get, the sadder it gets and more cringy it gets.
666Maggotz · F
@Ontheroad heh there isn’t anything more awkward than being 21 at the club and some 50 year old guy trying to dance with you 💀
Mardrae · F
@Ontheroad exactly!!

From the photos I've seen, I think your hair looks lovely!

@Mardrae when youve used your photo as a profile photo in the past.

@AstroZombie you have a good memory!

@Mardrae Lol thanks.

"Should" is the key question. Do what you want and don't let other people run your life and choices.
It’s old-fashioned and sexist, of course. The popular belief was that long hair on older women tended to ”draw one’s face down", long grey hair was the "wicked witch" effect, and of course no such "rules" exist for men. One thing I’ve loved about my generation is that we rewrote so many of society’s rules. And it fits that the younger of us would redefine what it means to be "elderly".
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
@bijouxbroussard Is that you?
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@bijouxbroussard Well, there are some unwritten rules for men too, or there should be, the half-bald toilet seat hair with a rat tail or ponytail sticking out the back of their ball cap is a no no, it just looks silly. The guy who's 65 with the cheap black hair dye job is a no no too. Mullett or skullett, again no. I mean I'm all about dress however you feel if it makes you feel good but act your age too 😊
OverTheHill · 61-69, M
Don't some people cut their hair, because they hate the time it takes to dry?
Some people's hair thins as they get older too.
Men tend to want to keep their hair, because it disappears sooner than women.

Wear your hair as you like! Long or short!
That was an unwritten social rule that was abolished by Gen X women.
Magenta · F
I abhor that attitude!
I am past your age and my hair is near my waist and I refuse to cut it, die it and look like a cue tip, like many. 😄
DrWatson · 70-79, M
My wife is in her 60's and has hair past her shoulders. I never gave that a second thought.

I have never heard of this "rule." And I think you are right to be dismissive of it.
Repete · 70-79, M
You have to stop listening to “they” and pay more attention to “ you” .
If it’s on you “ they” should keep their noses in their own business. That’s my opinion.
Get your hair cut only if you want to. Long hair looks great.
Jimmy2016 · 61-69, M
🤔...........Years ago my aunt had long gray hair way down her back at the age of 65 as I remember. She never did cut her hair. She died with long hair...........
"Will I think such questions are appropriate when I'm as old as you are?" with a smile.

That's nuts. My town is a popular retirement haven, and I see many women with long silver hair and a lot with long pink or blue hair.

Nobody gets to tell you how long or short your hair should be.

People who ask such questions pack away white shoes and belts on Labor Day and would rather walk through snow barefoot than wear white shoes.

Don't let the lemmings drag you with them to the cliff!
Mikla · 61-69, F
What a nonsense question to ask! Of course, do not cut your hair. Why would you? I am 63 with fairly long hair that is my natural gray/silver color and I absolutely love the way it looks. Most say I look younger and I agree!
Mardrae · F
@Mikla that's nice for you. I do unfortunately look a lot older than I am, but still don't want to dress or wear my hair like women my age are expected to.
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
Your hair. Do what you want.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
I hate that too!! As soon as you turn 40 or something you are expected to de-sexualize.
My mom thinks my sister should cut here hair (she is 59).

I think it's a bit of patriarchy. Woman who have children or past child rearing should just become virginal or nun like.
666Maggotz · F
Women over 40 have to have short hair? That’s so weird. My mom is 46 with long hair 🤔 society is full of idiots, if that’s any consolation. Just consider the source. They’re probably just ugly and want you to be ugly with them. I’m 26 with short hair, no one says I’m too young for it.
Because people think that all tattoo lady shave their heads. People are stupid don't listen to them.
