I retired at the age of 38 I’m 42 now and I love it I get to travel meet new people etc etc I wake up thank God and go out the sky is the limit what’s my next adventure!!!!! Thank you for asking

Carlisle · F Best Comment
Ye find a different pen pal
One that’s light hearted

I don’t like being asked that question myself
But there’s a way to reply without coming across weird
Carlisle · F
@Carlisle thank you for bc 🙂
RadiantRose · 31-35, F
Maybe she's insecure about her job, Sometimes insecurities make people lash out. I don't know if it's worth it to interact with overly sensitive people, it could be toxic. Are you going to give her another chance?
Fairydust · F
@RadiantRose 💯 Spot on.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@RadiantRose I would never have wanted to make her feel insecure but given that she has told me she goes to different countries on meditation retreats, I don’t think she’s in a bad place financially

I don’t think I’ll reply. I’ve been thinking about this since early February. I don’t want to upset her again and I don’t want to correspond with someone where I feel like i might say the wrong thing and offend her. I have many pen pals and I’ve never experienced this
@Jenny1234 evidently the meditation isnt working 😏
Fairydust · F
Yeah that would put me off, it’s normal to ask people what they do if you’re getting to know them. Sounds a bit strange.

I ask people all the time what they do for a living. 😳
iamnikki · 31-35, F
I don't get offended but i don't really like the question either.

For me, i do not like my job (have never liked any of my jobs, or felt that what i was doing was important enough).

Also, again me personally, id rather talk about my hobbies and interests.

Also want to add i do not think you did anything wrong by asking.
GunFinger · F
I'm pretty sure that wasn't me. Sometimes I get offended when asked that question too, but I'm alright with it. All I have to say is I'm a stay-at-home mum.😊
Madmonk · M
Maybe she’s really rich🤔

Or maybe she’s really poor 🤔

Chicks got issues
RadiantRose · 31-35, F
@Madmonk One extreme or another lol
WhateverWorks · 36-40
No because I’ve intentionally worked for / chosen a career I find meaningful, but I can see why other people who dislike their job would be offended
meggie · F
I never tell people what job i do when i first meet them. Instead i tell them I'm an office supervisor until i get to know them.
nedkelly · 61-69, M
NO - But I just told my manager she can have the job as I resign

The control freak
I never did. So much of who you are is tied up in what you spend most of your time doing. Choose your job carefully if you can. I’m a potter and my husband was a musician so we lived a slight off kilter, laid back lifestyle. Up all hours and running around. There’s a part of your community you never see if you’re not nocturnal.
yeah, im on a street corner, wtf you think i do 🙄
btchstfu · F
not offended, but i hate talking about it. i dont like people asking me questions regarding to what i do.
ExtremeNext · 31-35
@btchstfu 👊 let's go
btchstfu · F
@ExtremeNext square up bih
ExtremeNext · 31-35
@btchstfu 😲 what did you call me
I have actually ran into many people that do only ask to find out how much money you make because they want to judge you. They are also the kind of people that will get angry at you if you get any type of financial assistance.
SW-User
I haven't had that experience, where they are offended. And you're right, it's not the reason you ask. When you meet someone in person... often how to get to know another person starts with the context of how you meet them. But in chat... much of that is lost... so you go to basic things. Where do you live? What do you do? Family? Things you like?.... etc.

Of course... I have to cover up the fact... that... I'm a SuperDuperTopSecretWayDeepUndercoverSecretAgent....

Lol... just kidding... 🙃😉 ... and the correspondent before me is correct. They have the choice to politely defer, and not be weird about it.
scorpiolovedeep · 46-50, M
That question is slightly tricky…
Some people do get offended by it.

Perhaps .. you could ask

1. What kind of work do you do ?
2. Tell me about your career
PleasurePunch · 100+
no I get offended here if people say what's your favorite bit in some random bite..only cause they couldn't care less
Rickg · 31-35, M
I fly into an unstoppable rage
Laying waste to anyone in my path until I destroy the person that dared to ask me such a question.
Wiseacre · F
Why should I?
I could understand some ppl feel ashamed because they make minimum wage or are unemployed.
ExtremeNext · 31-35
I don't see anything wrong with it at all, she probably is on welfare and got embarrassed
zonavar68 · 51-55, M
Some people feel that what they do for work is private/confidential like their real age. I guess it is possible to guess a person's income based on their job. I just tell people what my job is because my shiftwork is a prime 'scare factor' for nearly every single woman around. It's my automatic filter for the 99.99999999 percent of self-absorbed princesses who think a man should be their handbag.
PleasurePunch · 100+
@zonavar68 I am offended that so many wanna guess our income, its so obvious when they are doing that...and I always have a way to deflect them, to shown them that another question is more appropriate
deadgerbil · 22-25
No. That's a weird thing to get offended over. Maybe she's not happy where she is in life and got bitter at you
I don't get offended I just Hope that whom ever is asking that question is listen to my whole story.😅
NickiHijab · F
That's a weirdly defensive stance for her to take. She probably has her reasons tho
No, im a carpenter, usually i get an intresting creative look, when i explain what i do.
morrgin · F
I would think penpals ask each other those sort of things
Catzgano · 31-35, F
Why I hate dinner parties 😂
🤷‍♂️ Doesn’t bother me

I agree that your job may not define you, but it is a big part of your life and I think its a normal thing to ask someone
I prefer not to talk about my work or career history... mostly because I have hated every step of the way.
Yes, it is none of anyones' business to know.
Besides, it exhausts me to reply.
Bri89 · 31-35, M
No, I don't. It seems like a petty thing to get offended over.
It’s funny, that would never have occurred to me. I have no idea what people earn and couldn’t care less. I think of one’s occupation as simply how one makes his/her way in this world, a part of who one is—but certainly not the most important part.
I wonder if she’s been hit up for money in the past after being asked ? 🤨
MonaReeves86 · 36-40, F
Do you hand write or do email or something
itsok · 31-35, F
@Jenny1234 do you have a site you use to find your snail mail penpals? I’ve joined one in the past but I ended up feeling like I wouldn’t have anything good enough to talk about. I like stationery though
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@itsok I use penpalworld and globalpenfriends
SilkandLace2 · 46-50, M
@Jenny1234 that's really cool!🤗
DDonde · 31-35, M
I don't get offended, I just don't like having to answer it
SW-User
Sounds like a Cane Toad, Sand Groper or Mexican ( Melbourne )

These states are full of stupid people
nedkelly · 61-69, M
@SW-User you left off the two heads from Tasmania
😄@nedkelly *glares at you *
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
Yah that was rude of her, she could have replied in a different manner. I would find a new pen pal.
SW-User
Yeah, she's a loon ball, did you meet her on sw?? 😅😅
SW-User
It doesn't offend me but I'll admit it isn't my favourite question
