Do you get offended when someone asks you what you do for a living?

So I started corresponding with an Australian penpal last summer. In my last letter to her around xmas, I asked her what she does because I’m interested in getting to know what she likes. She wrote back and told me she hates when people ask her that question because it means they are trying to find out how much money she makes.

That absolutely was not why I asked!

I’m so put off by her remark that I’m having second thoughts about continuing to correspond with her. If she didn’t want to answer she shouldn’t have said anythin

Some people feel that what they do for work is private/confidential like their real age. I guess it is possible to guess a person's income based on their job. I just tell people what my job is because my shiftwork is a prime 'scare factor' for nearly every single woman around. It's my automatic filter for the 99.99999999 percent of self-absorbed princesses who think a man should be their handbag.

@zonavar68 I am offended that so many wanna guess our income, its so obvious when they are doing that...and I always have a way to deflect them, to shown them that another question is more appropriate
