This is what happens when you expect too much from someone. Not sure if you're a guy and fell in love with the guy or you're a female, but all I got to say is that you push your feelings to the side and continue being his friend and support him despite you having feelings for him. I know it'll be hard. You can even tell him your feelings regardless if he's still in love with his ex. Maybe that's one way to push the feelings aside is to let it out verbally.
Who knows? Maybe he likes you too and is currently in a dilemma. Men are hard to read, so there's possibilities that he may have feelings for you or just needed someone to talk to.

That's the problem when the ex is still around. honeslty until he is fully over her it's never wise to start planning a future with this person. 🤔
