It isn't good for you to "put your fingers in fire" or do things that will bring you angst and it is unfair to the men you will interact with who may not realize you have a negative feeling of dating them long before you potential go on a date with them.

I think with both genders there are people who for various reasons are not mentally in place where dating makes sense and based on your OP you may be one of those people.
