Going Away for a Few Days...

I got word this morning that someone who used to work for me died last week. We were both civilian employees of the DoD and he was on my team. In our roles, we would ocassionally head "outside the wire" ... into the field for various ops ("missions"). On one such trip, spring 2024, things went less than ideal and I literally owe him my life. I left that role back at the beginning of this year and he left shortly after me.

He went on to a new role that would have him operating outside the wire more often. He was a sheepdog's sheepdog. If you ever found yourself in a pile of shit, this is the man you would pray was there with you. Anyway, his number came up last week and his body arrived home on Saturday, his soul having already moved on.

I'm spending time today polishing leather and brass. I have not had an ocassion to put on my dress whites since 2023, but I will put them on this week for him. He was army when he was active and I was navy; and we teased each other constantly over that. But our paths crossed when we both were seeking a way to make the world a better place.

Anyway, despite the eleven hour drive, I have decided to drive rather than fly. I could fly, but I think I need the time that the drive will afford me. I leave early tomorrow morning and will drive back either Friday or Saturday. I'll have you guys with me and will check in from time to time but likely less than usual; and if my mood is off you will know why.

While I'm gone, please be kind to one another. Seek understanding over victory.

No stronger bond than those forged by the brother/sisterhood of the military. My condolences on your loss.

A reminder to celebrate our past relationships while they are still living. Yesterday a colleague who worked for and with me 60 years ago each drove an hour to have lunch together. Not the first time, and hopefully not the last for two old geezers well into the 80's. Our connection was not military, but was forged during similar crisis periods dealing with outside forces we had little control over. It was great catching up on where our separate paths have taken us.

@dancingtongue Thank you. My uniform, freshly pressed & polished, is hanging in back. I am three-ish hours from the hotel. Tomorrow, I will pay tribute to a soldier gone home. 😔

I am sorry that you have to say goodbye to a person that meant a lot in your life; not as a partner for life but as a person that saved your life 😞

I am grateful that he did what he could do. Be safe on your travels and return to us.

Losing a friend is always hard but losing someone you owe your life to is unbearable. My deepest thoughts are with you.

I am so sorry for your loss Sara. It is not often that we meet a true patriot that is willing to risk all for his country. God Bless. 🙏🏻

@Livingwell One of the blessings of military service is the opportunity to have met many people who have written that open ended check. 🙏

@ineedadrink Thank you ... It's funny ... "be kind to yourself too" is such an appropriate thing to say at times like this, but something I don't think about. Thank you for that. 🫂

@ArtieKat Indeed. Thank you 🫂
God bless him. May he rest in peace.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@SinlessOnslaught He is at peace. He did not live life at peace. He lived a life seeking peace and understanding, and was a fierce defender of peace ... but defending peace often calls for very not peaceful actions. 😔 But he is at peace now. 🙏
@sarabee1995 🙏❤‍🩹
