Lost an old friend and bandmate last week, best guitar player I ever worked with. Gutted. Just gutted.

Woke up to the news on Wednesday while I was on vacation. Have not accepted it yet. 30 years of making amazing music comes to an abrupt ending.

I first met this man through a mutual former bandmate in the 90s. "You've got to see this guy play, he's ridiculous!" And he was right. An imposing man of 6' 7"(!), Bruce made a Les Paul look like a ukelele. Played effortlessly in many different styles. Could play any Eddie van Halen or Rush, anything you could ask for or put in front of him.

He played with national acts. He also did work with Angelo Badalamenti, film/TV composer. He was "that" level. Knew hundreds of songs, had perfect pitch, could speak through his instrument. I don't think he liked touring. He certainly could have been a member of any number of bands, as is the case with some people I know. Music was his passion, though--he taught music, wrote it, recorded it, played it live, was a huge fan. I'll never forget him calling me to discuss the Beatles remasters in 2009 on the day they were released.

Worked with him live, first in a trio with my former bandmate, then in the studio in the early 2000s, then finally as a member of my Beatles band and with my girlfriend in an 80s band, where I often subbed in for the regular drummer.

He was a musical force of nature, but was also the cliched gentle giant. We used to talk before and after big shows, and he often needed a ton of reassurance that his playing was good! However, he was equally supportive of YOU if you played alongside him.

Sadly, he suffered from huge weight losses and gains which I believe shortened his time here. He also had Bipolar II and his share of demons. I think some of these things contributed to immense stress in his personal life. I also do not think that he was satisfied with his playing, even though people were heaping praise on nearly everything he did. He had gained weight again recently, and had just begun losing it as well, when he seemed unsteady on his feet.

Now, everybody claims to know "a great player", but check out the video down below--it's beyond opinion. He's playing with the great Deodato and killing it. If you know players like this who are also great souls, you are blessed beyond measure.

We were down the shore when we got a terrible phone call. Bruce suffered a massive heart attack in his sleep. He was 55 years old.

He was a true entertainer and devotee of his craft. I am not usually swayed by over-the-top guitar wizardry like this, but he makes it fun to watch his casual attack on the confines of his instrument.
I'm kind of surprised Deodato is letting him do that on his stage...! Sidemen in the big leagues don't
usually get to show off like that, but it's obvious
But of course, this post is about losing your talented buddy and what he meant to you,and words never quite capture that. But you'll never forget him,so tell the odd tale around the campfire,or tell new kids about a funny story during loadout,or plant a tree in his honor,or some other little thing to help keep his name and artistic legacy vital...and know that the music outlives us all.

It's just been nightmarish. A friend of the bandleader offered to bring over a sapling dedicated to him and then she herself passed away. I mean, this wouldn't even work in a movie.

So the band had their first appearance without him. It was well-attended. One ex-member showed up to sing, and I sat in on four songs. One of his guitars was displayed the whole night. During one song's guitar solo, one of the band members held it up, thrusting it heavenward.

The last song was Let's Go Crazy, on which he usually went nuts during the guitar break, so they played it one last time and retired it, but at the ending, they played back a recording of HIM with the band playing it and there were tears everywhere, lots of hugging and crying, I just lost it when I realized that I will never see him again.

It will sink in better as time goes by. Also going to display his guitar at my band's next gig, as he would play with us often.

I'm doing that thing where I play back the times before we got the call. The day before, my girlfriend and I went to a liquor store. Upon entering, Billy Joel's "Leave A Tender Moment Alone" was playing. Then, "This Is The Time", when we did most of our shopping there. Knowing that it was his last day alive, I can never hear that song the same way again. The lyrics aren't all applicable, but some are:

This the time to remember, 'cause it will not last forever
These are the days to hold onto
Cause we won't although we'll want to

Thank you everyone. I just have to get through the service tomorrow. It's going to suck.

@bijouxbroussard Thank you, friend.

We said goodbye to him today. I don't believe it's going to sink in until I no longer see him at gigs. The 80s band he played in plans on displaying one of his guitars at every show for the rest of the time the band exists.

We(Beatles band)were supposed to play with him next weekend, at a place near where he grew up. It could be a tough one.

I'm posting this song because it's not the typical song of loss. Yes, it does hit some issues head-on, but I find it strangely comforting.
This is a place that very few songwriters can get to, if at all. I'm listening because it heals me. Perhaps it can offer you some catharsis and healing, as well.

@Slade That's the thing--he was so consistent, rarely mucked up parts.
