Will I stop wanting cigarettes?

Like, when I first quit drinking I still wanted to drink, and now I don't, so I have no reason to think cigarettes will be any different, but it's so much more intense I'm worried I'll always wanna smoke?

You got this!

I have faith in you!
WanderingHelplessly · 51-55, M
Eventually, yes
fun4us2b · M
It goes away - and just keep remembering how good it is for you to stop...
Nightwings · F
@fun4us2b I am not sure now lol, one lady says she has to forever fiddle with something in her hand, a man says that his wife started smoking again and why would she do that if it wasnt a problem anymore?

Thing is apart from health, main reason I'm quitting is to get rid of the distraction, because I do so many creative projects, l like writing and painting, and I cannot focus without chain-smoking, so I am really really hoping that by quitting smoking all-together, in half a year to a year I can just focus all the time without smoking at all. 😥
fun4us2b · M
@Nightwings Just decide it. I hope it works for you.
Nightwings · F
@fun4us2b What? You can decide to quit, you cannot decide the physical thing that happens to your brain. Will it or will it not distract of quit? It is not a personal decision, it is a signal being sent or not being sent by things in your brain to other things in your brain. There is a asswer yes or no, why do you not know it if you quit smoking? Do you just live constantly in delusion or something? You sound like maybe you should be in mental hospital, if you do not understand difference between reality and fantasy.

I quit smoking on July 7, 2006. I still get cravings, not near as often but they are there. I don't dare give in to them, because I know all it would take would be one, and in a short while I would be back up to a pack and a half a day plus. It was just too damned hard to quit.
Nightwings · F
@bowman81 If you still get cravings what's even the difference?! Can you still not concentrate now?!
bowman81 · M
@Nightwings I only get them a few times a year and they are fleeting. Still there, but much easier to control.
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
Yeah its tough to end an addiction but if you make it through the first week it gets easier.

Its a trial of will power. If you conquer it you will learn lessons about integrity, perserverance and built character.
Nightwings · F
@GuyWithOpinions No I mean I am not gonna smoke again, I just wanna know before waiting half a year to a year is there normally hope that it goes away with time, thoughts of smoking won't keep distracting me from creative projects etc? I assume it can maybe take up to a year before it FULLY goes aeay but idk, I'm gonna do it for as long as it takes to get there, I am just scared if it's not possible. It should be... But I heard some people say it never went away for them...
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
@Nightwings everyone has a different experience. Some have an easier time letting go.
Nightwings · F
@GuyWithOpinions I just need the distraction gone that's the whole point. Fine it it takes years but there is only a point if eventually it works. There is no "letting it go" there is only what happens in reality, not inside some idiot's head. What is reality, I am not asking about people's fucking fantasies.
Nicotine addiction... Once you get past a month or two, it'll only be about the Will to stay away from it.

There's one program of pills called Champix. It kills the craving and the taste of tobacco cigarettes.
PinkMoon · 26-30, F
Download an app called Quitsure. I haven't smoked in 5 years after following its course. It's been years but when I did it it was a 6 day course. It promised a 6 day cure but I could only make it to day 4 of the program before I got too repulsed by cigarettes to smoke them. You have to smoke everyday on the program because it's basically rewiring your brain to hate cigarettes. When I'm around smokers I'm not tempted,I'm repulsed. I had been on and off smoking since 1 was 14 and I was cured in 4 day, God bless the people that made the app.
Nightwings · F
@PinkMoon Lol but I already quit so I'm not gonna start again to follow the program. xD

I wanted a cigarette for 4 days. After that the physical addiction began to fade. Just stay in the moment. The past is gone. The future will take care of itself. Be here now.
lissah · 36-40, F
I smoked for years and quit cold turkey. I never had any problems as long as i kept something in my hand continuously like holding an ink pen or something.
lissah · 36-40, F
@Nightwings no just for a couple of months. It doesn't bother me now.
Nightwings · F
@lissah Ohhh that's great news!
@lissah yeap... It works.
SpectralMourning · 46-50, M
There will be times your mind has the want to smoke. It sometimes still hits me and I stopped about 16 years ago. But it passes quickly. It definitely doesn't require anything close to the determination needed right after quitting. Usually I just laugh it off because smoking is simply something I don't do anymore.
SpectralMourning · 46-50, M
@Nightwings Porn with sad faces. You'd need some angsty customers.

I hope you'll keep fighting...I can vouch that it's tough as fuck. Determination can prevail though.
Nightwings · F
@SpectralMourning Yea I am not gonna smokr or anything, I have definitely quit, not sure why people question that aspect. It is not pleasant but it's done, not gonna reverse ot lol. It will take time to become better, that's fine. I just really want to know if I can be fully productive in the future. From your replies I guess yes, you actually believe so? You just worry the road there is hard, but I don't care about suffering to achieve future results haha. {=
SpectralMourning · 46-50, M
@Nightwings I'm speaking from my own experience in quitting smoking. I go through an 8 hour workday and I won't sit here daydreaming about how I want a cigarette. Of course now that I'm talking about it possibly a different story. But 99% of the days it's just not even something I think about. So yes I definitely believe you could draw your porn in peace.

My wife quit cold turkey when we married, but started smoking again a few years later. She did it secretly until I caught her. She quit again and has not smoked in the past 30 years. You can do it. It helps to avoid being around smokers.
Nightwings · F
@exexec Why did she start again, did it never go away? It worked with alcohol for me fine...
exexec · 70-79, C
@Nightwings She worked in an office where everyone else smoked, so she joined in. She says that when she quit smoking, some of the others stopped, also. That made it easier for her to avoid smoking. Plus, she never bought any more cigarettes, so the temptation was not in her purse.

13 years later I'd still like a cigarette some days. Knowing their is no "just one" helps me not and the fact they generally smell disgusting.

I set an alarm and made my morning cigarette later every day
Nightwings · F
@Justafantasy Ok but you say some days? So you can still sit down and focus on a creative project like a painting, or writing a book, without getting distracted by the thoughT of cigarettes, no? I fkng love the smell of cigarettes btw LOL.
@Nightwings working construction where everyone has a cigarette hanging out of their mouth all the time it's hard to resist temptation. I lost my multi tasking ability with cigarettes long time ago so yeah, anything I do now I use both hands.

As to the smell I've deliberately stood down wind of smokers to enjoy second hand smoke, I've also been absolutely disgusted by the smell at times. No set reason as to why, chewed a lot of gum when I first quit too. Not nicotine gum, just regular gum and had a pen in my hand to twirl around
Magenta · F
Probably. It eventually fades. I quit many years ago, but I would dream about it, so weird. I'd wake up thinking I had smoked and I was like "Noooo". I was tempted a few times to 'just' take a drag from another's, but never did.

Best thing I did, was quit that.
