Yea and I ring a bell while calling out to my 8 kids on the farm to let them know it’s ready

According to my Mom...

Dinner is the "big meal" of the day... which can be at any time. So if lunch is the big meal, such as after church family lunch, then that's dinner.

Where as, lunch is the mid-day meal and supper is the evening meal.

She would say breakfast is the morning meal, but if we're being technical about this (as she is with dinner) then technically breakfast is the meal that you break your fasting...

Which means if you skip any morning meals, and your first meal is at lunch, then it can technically also be breakfast.

Therefore, breakfast, dinner and lunch can technically all be the same mid-day meal.

When I was a kid, I called it supper. Somewhere down the line it changed to dinner
@JimboSaturn

We're an appealing mix of Brit and American terms 👍🏻

@JimboSaturn It's long been a British word. It may well have entered Canadian and American use but did not originate there.

Indeed, Chambers' Dictionary gives it Old English and Old French etymology and meaning a light meal taken in the evening.

The Fr. was an old verb sopper, meaning to eat and drink in small portions. It survives in Northern English in the phrase, "Sup up" often used in pubs as part of an offer to buy another drink.

@ArishMell Yes I agree. Just like we used to call all couches "Chesterfields" when I was a kid. The older more British generation.

It's supper in the evening 🦖
No. Lol. I have a friend who says she feels bad when she hears people say they're going to have "supper" because for some reason it makes her think they're very poor or something. Like it's the last fucking supper. I'm still trying to understand why she's like this. Lol

It varies in Britain.

Although "Dinner" with a capital D is often used for formal events like a large club's "Annual General Meeting & Dinner", it's not itself a formal word.

It generally and simply refers to the day's main meal; which can be around mid-day or in the early evening.

A lot of Britons now use "lunch" for the mid-day meal, whether a significant cooked one of (usually) two courses, or simply a pack of sandwiches one might take to work.

If dinner is a cooked meal at "lunch-time" (around mid-day) the lighter evening meal is called "tea."

I have not heard or read the word "supper" for many years. It seems falling out of use, or perhaps has become more regional in use.

Since moving to England I have found that most people invite for 'supper', implying informality; dinner being too formal a word.

"Kitchen supper" emphasises the informality.

@HijabaDabbaDoo i expected nothing less
