I couldn't swim at least not in a serious way. I'm from the Mojave desert water enough to swim in was more just to play. I never really developed any actual technique. I can swim pretty good now just from. Youtube videos.

@Munumbis thats so cool
Munumbis · 46-50, M
@BarelyTamed I'm trying to get a dive certificate. I have a sail boat and I want to try my hand at growing food at sea. Stuff like muscles or sea vegetables.
BarelyTamed · 31-35, FNew
@Munumbis thats nice. Im sure u can do it
Magicianzini · M
For both of your safety, make sure to tell your instructor about your higher level fear.

@emiliya You can't do it with me like others, I hope you realize.
Go play somewhere else. I'm not it.

I think it's admirable that you have enrolled in a swimming class. It may be easier than you think. 😊
Justbegood · 31-35, M
I’ll teach you.

My boyfriend is the same as you.

It is, most certainly, a life enhancing, and potentially a life saving, skill
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
Of course you can
Will be wonderful

That’s not ridiculous
If you never learned when you were younger you never would
Good luck with your class
You’ll do great!

I think it’s a great idea that you’re willing to learn to swim. Face your fear head on and finally be able to enjoy swimming as a recreation. It’s great exercise too!
Confined · 56-60, M
An important skill to have, I taught myself at about age 5. I did not want to be out done by my older brothers. I love the water.
You never know you could end up in the water by accident. Being able to swim to safety is preferred.

BarelyTamed · 31-35, FNew
@Confined yes thats why I really want to learn it. But the moment my face gets in water I panic
Confined · 56-60, M
@BarelyTamed I dont like my face in the water but I can deal with it if I must. Once you learn it, its just a matter of practice in shallow water.
pdockal · 56-60, M
I'm sure you'll do fine
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
EVERYONE needs to know how to swim
sparklingdiamonds · 51-55, F
Tell them you're scared..take it slow and see how it goes, don t feel pressured into doing anything you don't feel.ok with..I hate water too..😘
emiliya · 26-30, F
@sparklingdiamonds You hate water? But you have lots of water in your body. And you have to drink it, and fill the bathtub with water when you wash. What about standing underneath it?
Do you want to look like a mummy? They don't have water.

@emiliya grow up..or give the phone back to your carer and take your meds...you know fine what we're talking about..if not..go back to your cartoons and leave conversation to the adults....
emiliya · 26-30, F
@sparklingdiamonds What meds? I don't take meds. Not even paracetamol or ibuprofen. I also don't have a carer. Damn, I don't watch cartoons either.
Billybob2 · 26-30, M
More common than you think, there are athletes who don't know how to swim.
Prison1203 · 61-69, M
It’s easier than you may think, my grandmother never learned to swim until after I pushed her in the pool they had , I never knew she couldn’t swim, scared the crap out of both of us , so do yourself and learn how
DareToSayIT · M
You have made the right decision. Wish you the best.
Birdbox1986 · 36-40, F
My cousin didn’t know how to swim we went into the main pool area where it was a certain level, but, it was deep, I taught her how to swim for free!!! There’s no need to be afraid try a shallow area then use a floating device like a paddle board or one of those tubes , to help you float
BarelyTamed · 31-35, FNew
@Birdbox1986 its not like I can move forward fast and steady
Birdbox1986 · 36-40, F
@BarelyTamed if you can float and paddle your feet and move your arms your swimming
BarelyTamed · 31-35, FNew
@Birdbox1986 thats inspiring thank u

You've got this
Convivial · 26-30, F
No where near as embarrassing as drowning unnecessarily.... You're doing the right thing... Is never too late to learn something new... Enjoy
emiliya · 26-30, F
@Convivial It is men who jump in to save drowning kids. Men save kids who don't even belong to them.
I was a real water child. I always loved the water. Do you? I love it so much I got caught in a current. That current took my sandals, and I used my arms to get out of it. No one ever taught me that; I just knew. That isn't going to happen to her because she is scared of water and would never go to the deep part.

emiliya · 26-30, F
@Convivial She jumps only if there are no men around. Jumping into a pool is not like jumping into open water. You need a plan with things like that. Imagine being out with your kid and there is no man, but that kid brought their soccer ball along. That soccer ball could save you both. Or the cooler you use to store food.
Even better is to make the kid wear a life jacket.

If you don't overcome your fear of water, you will always be scared.
sparklingdiamonds · 51-55, F
@Wireman I'm good with that..I hate being in deep water..lol
Wireman · 31-35, M
@sparklingdiamonds Being in deep water always make you wonder about what is down there. But I think of you are a good swimmer it helps a lot.
DomMan67 · 56-60, M
It is very admirable that you are facing your fear head on. Well done. Once you realize you are able to keep yourself afloat you will feel much more comfortable.
DomMan67 · 56-60, M
@BarelyTamed Since you can already keep yourself afloat you're going to be swimming in no time.
It is very admirable that even though you have panic attacks when your face hits the water you're still willing to try and that's why you will succeed.

Don’t sweat it.
I also never learned how to swim. There’s a humourus story about it that’s too long to post.
But I’m sure there are other things you can do instead.

You can swim... if you don't panic and freeze up. Facing a fear is a huge step, good on you! Just be sure the coach/instructor knows of your fears, and don't feel embarrassed, they have heard it before.
BarelyTamed · 31-35, FNew
@Ontheroad thanks🙏
gregloa · 61-69, M
Get in like 3 1/2 to 4’ of water. Hold your nose and close your eyes and let yourself go under. Relax and you will float back up. It might take several tries but when you’re comfortable try to lean forward while floating. You’ll soon realize as long as you’re holding your breath you’ll stay floating. Then when you’re ready simply start kicking and paddle your hands while floating. Presto you’re swimming and then start breathing while kicking and paddling your hands. Nothing to it.
BarelyTamed · 31-35, FNew
@gregloa thank u🙏
Softandsweet2 · 36-40, F
Your parents are the ones that should be embarrassed. Kids need to learn at an early age.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
I've got a few years on you and have never learned to swim. And it nearly cost me my life at one juncture, and still never got up sufficient desire, or found the time, to learn how as an adult.
Otoh, my mother-in-law took lessons and learned to swim when she was nearly 70. Enjoyed it immensely.
I salute your courage, and echo the advice of someone else who suggested you warn the instructor that you have a high fear index to overcome. Your body is buoyant to some degree, but not when tense and dealing with survival fears.
