I met an interesting guy at a potluck…

He is 79, a draft dodger from Texas. He seems mentally sharp but tells me he’s been living in a shelter the last five yrs. He is looking for work and asks me if I know someone who would hire him as a domestic live-in. Wants to live for free in exchange for being a servant…cooking, cleaning, personal care, etc…your comments, please!

He had a job looking after a woman until she died at 97…tells me he has good references.

I wouldn't do it, based solely on the fact that it is in fact slavery. I understand we need solutions to our homeless problem, but I wouldn't want this to be one of those solutions.

@calicuz i dont think the point of it has anything to do with all the homless people. Its just this one old guy doing what he wants to do. I highly doubt all the homeless people want that life.

I agree, I believe the majority of our homeless want to get back on their feet, especially those with children, we just need to work harder to help them.

I'd be very cautious and probably wouldn't even attempt it unless they were with a proper agency and had all relevant checks done.

I think he ought to get an agency to hire him. I would be a lot more comfortable employing someone through an agency.

@Wiseacre People can go to agencies/companies to hire housekeepers and part-time caregivers etc, and they are bonded and insured. I was thinking there were probably companies for work like his, if he is really qualified.
