How common are bears 🐻 in America?

And does playing dead really work?

Depends on what part of the US you are in. I've never seen one here but I've known people who claimed to have seen one just a few miles up the road.. Other parts of the US they tend to be very common.

I live in black bear country and it’s not uncommon for them to hang out in my yard.

You’re supposed to try to scare them off. I think playing dead only works with brown bears.

Not that common in most areas. They try to stay away from us humans because us humans are very dangerous. Playing dead is can work well against anything except a polar bear, but if you run into a black bear, you're better off standing tall and yelling.

The only measure that's effective in a polar bear encounter is a high-powered rifle.
There are brown and black bears in a lot of places.

Grizzly and Kodiak bears are less common and far more dangerous. (Same goes for polar bears, but that's pretty obvious.)

So common around here in NJ that we have a yearly hunt to cull the number of them wandering through neighborhoods.
