In a smart and innovative urban move, Belgium has introduced designated 'Texting Lanes' and 'No Texting Lanes' on busy sidewalks to improve pedestrian safety. With smartphones becoming a constant part of daily life, many people tend to text or scroll while walking, often leading to accidental bumps or near-misses in crowded public spaces. Recognizing this growing issue, certain Belgian cities decided to address it with a creative solution.

These lanes are clearly marked on pavements—one side for people actively using their phones, and the other for those who are walking without distractions. The aim is to reduce sidewalk collisions, promote awareness, and encourage mindful walking. The idea also helps avoid frustration for non-distracted pedestrians, who often find themselves stuck behind slower, phone-focused walkers.

Though it may seem quirky, this small change has had a big impact. It shows how thoughtful, people-centric design can solve modern-day urban challenges. By acknowledging changing habits and creating inclusive infrastructure, Belgium sets an example for other cities around the world. It’s not just about convenience—it’s about safety, awareness, and smarter living.

As a non-texting pedestrian, I would appreciate this!

But I am surprised to see the sign written in English.

@DrWatson I didn't think about that but very true👍

Has it really gotten that bad in the cities

That they have to do that.

Why don't just removed texting phones and make them all rotary dial cellphones.

I’m never getting my flying car that folds up into a briefcase huh?… 😑

I think it’s AI generated.
@Nick1 The BBC reported on it...

@HootyTheNightOwl This is what I get searching on net:
In 2015, Antwerp, Belgium, implemented temporary "text walking lanes" on sidewalks to reduce collisions between pedestrians, according to BBC News. The lanes were marked with white paint, according to The Telegraph. While the scheme was initially seen as a potential solution, it was later revealed that the lanes were a publicity stunt by a local smartphone company, according to Quartz
So, it’s 10 year old news and I don’t see any official notification or news. So, only local residents or recent visitors can say if it is true or not.
Like so many things on net, old stories keep recycling from time to time. Everyone posting on many sites makes it viral. After a while, it seems true.
What did they do to the cycle lanes???

@HootyTheNightOwl I was wondering if they are thinking of repurposing multiple lanes for walkers, cyclists, 4 wheel mobility scooters or maybe electric versus non electric! I cannot hear those scooters coming up behind me!

due to the lamp posts, the no texting lane is way too small, it should actually be larger than the texting lane since people texting usually move in herds of a single file

I think it's preventing evolution... It's letting bad genes remain safe 😜
