Do you keep a careful watch on your credit score?

I find the older I get the more I track it. It varies few points, if it backsides I go into strategic mode like *fix this now, dammit!*

Someone asked me why mine is important to me.

I have to not only provide for my future. But my daughters future after im gone. So, yes, it's important to me that everything stays positive on it.

My credit card company gives me my score with each statement.

I was amused when my score went down immediately after we paid off our mortgage.

(They actually want us to be in debt and paying interest.)

@Neoerectus Wait... Banking should not be a for profit industry??? Lol. Other than prostitution, I think banking is the original for profit industry.

How could someone loan you money to buy a car or a house if they didn't charge you interest on the loan??
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 Fairly sure the banking shares I bought after the GFC at $27 were bought with profit in mind...good returns around 5% on increasing share values which are now around $125 per share.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Not really. When I get a notice about it changing I MIGHT check it out, but generally I don't think about it. We don't buy on time, don't owe anyone, and pay our credit cards on time, so often we get a notice that the companies have trouble figuring out our credit score because they don't have any debts to trace. If we can't afford it we don't buy it, and I guess that frustrates them.
I don't even know where to check mine or whether I have one.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Elessar I know you can get a registration for various things, and that you don't get notified if that happens. But I'm not sure we have a score or if everyone is in that register by default with a positive remark if they never get in trouble. 🤔
Elessar · 26-30, M
@NerdyPotato I think it's only if you have unpaid debts from what I'm reading. It also varies country by country
IM5688 · 61-69, M
Yes, I keep an eye on it, but it's not anything I get worked up about. It goes up, it goes down, not a big deal really.
Not wanting to get political here but, IMO it's really just another form of gov't control.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@IM5688 I agree with you.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
Here your credit score goes down if you check it too often.
Once a year we check.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@Justmeraeagain Here it goes down if you pay your bills and don't incur debt -- they companies claim they can't judge your ability to pay off your bills if you don't borrow and owe.

@ChipmunkErnie we are still paying on house otherwise wouldn't bother
Ontheroad · M
I used to and if it fell below the excellent level, I'd get busy and fix it. Now I rarely bother to look.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
What is a credit score and why should I care about it? I don't have any debt and don't plan on taking any on.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@IM5688 So why should I care?
IM5688 · 61-69, M
@hippyjoe1955 Whether or not you feel the need to care about it is up to you. I was just trying to explain what it is and partly what it used for.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@IM5688 For those who get tied up worrying about such nonsense it seems to be important. For those of us who don't care it seems silly.
Selah ·
No. Although my bank apps inform me anyway
I haven't bought anything using credit for years but I do pay all monthly bills on time and always pay more so the next bills are small.
ineedadrink · 51-55, M
Yep, same, ignoring the fact that once you are in the "excellent" band, moving up slightly won't get one better rates.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
Yup. I used the Experian app for identity theft protection and it shows me my credit score any time I open it. 🙂
I haven’t looked at mine in years. It’s probably low or erased by now since I stopped using credit.
SW-User
At least once a month
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@Bexsy @SW-User I wouldn't do it so often your credit score can be negatively impacted by checking it too often.
SW-User
@Justmeraeagain Even if it’s the free credit score my mortgage company gives me each month?
@Justmeraeagain you can check credit karma free and without impact. You can also lock your credit report on others trans, equafax etc if you want to be sure nobody can do a check on your report or so you wont take out a credit card. These are tools readily available
SW-User
Yes, I do, I track it on 2 apps.
minnygirl · 31-35, F
It’s sad how much I obsess over mine and it’s also sad how much it impacts your life in general.

Imagine if this applied to our government…their score would be miserable
@minnygirl when I was younger didn't realize how important it was to my future
minnygirl · 31-35, F
@Bexsy neither did I. I had no clue how much it influences you
FreestyleArt · 36-40, M
Nope. Probably forgot mine and I don't care. I don't follow this type of class society
Samek · 36-40, M
Currently an 804. They milking me dry xD
@Samek very nice 👌
Samek · 36-40, M
@Bexsy Thank you. I capitalism decently but shhh... Don't tell them I am a socialist at heart!
@Samek i know nothing! NOTHING!
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
Yes, me too!

Musicman · 61-69, M
No I don't. I try hard not to use credit. The house and the cars are paid for and we are not buying anything else.
Moneyonmymind · 31-35, M
Not lately only because I’m behind on my bill so I see no point
empanadas · 31-35, M
