That so-called "intelligent statement" that you said he made is really more of a 'common sense' statement than it is an intelligent statement.
If you're hearing for the very first time someone saying, "Make sure the problems you're escaping are not your own, otherwise they will follow no matter where you go", then I seriously doubt that you actually understand what he's talking about.

I've given it passing consideration from time to time over the years.
But there are so many horror stories from folk who tried and got it spectacularly wrong.
I think you have to do some serious research.
I mean go to your preferred choice of location for regular visits before making such a decision.
Lots of things you probably take for granted where you currently are that just wouldn't work the same way in other countries.
And you being the foreigner might face all kinds of unknown discrimination if you have to compete with native people for certain services some might consider 'Us first, foreigners after'.

All the time and I simply know it would be hard. 🤷🏻♀️ Let's be honest, unless you're already dirty rich, you're someone with skills that are in high demand or at least have a decent diploma from a prestigious university, it's very likely you're going to lose a lot of money and might not be able to live a satisfying and comfortable life for a long time before things will settle down.

@DHggmu Also, searching for a place to live as a single person is another aspect. Depending on the country, you will very likely have to share the apartment with some random strangers and maybe deal with scammy landlords.

@DrWatson I read that for many locals Hawaii is not that much of paradise. The rent is high, taxes are high but pay is usually crap so there are multiple families in one house. Many people go out of their way to be as much off grid as possible to avoid high prices for energy supplies and the waste management system.

that place sucks if you are looking for work for anything more than construction worker, fisherman, or grocery store clerk
there are jobs for professionals but the job pool for any kind of job in the entire country is maybe 1000 or 500 positions max
that is for the entire country so you will be competing in a country of millions for those positions
thats like everyone in Texas competing for 500 jobs in Austin
the favorite national pastime of Norwegians is to fly away from the country on holiday to Spain
the tendency of them to leave their own country because of the weather is even reflected in one of their national songs saying exactly that
