Maslow's Hierarchy of 'Needs'

How many of them are actually 'needs'?

[image/video - please log in to see this content]

I have serious doubts about this, if only because right at the bottom, the level that is supposed to be the most basic and essential, the level upon which the others rest, there is 'reproduction'. Having children is a need, and a very basic one too? Gee, someone should have told me! 😂
On the next level there is 'property'! Oh dear. Was this guy sniffing glue when he came up with this "pyramid"?
The way the "pyramid" works is that the needs below need to be met first in order for the ones above to be of use, to work, to enhance one's life, but it all assumes way too much. For example, the 'need' to have children assumes that we all want children because otherwise our lives are pointless and we remain miserable, but that's obviously not true, and is, quite frankly, absurd.
Private property isn't a need either, and depending upon one's personality, may not even be a desire. Some people are gratified by having a lot of "stuff", but many of us are not because we're not at all materialistic.
No, this is junk pseudoscience, but I will not be at all surprised if I receive comments to the effect that I, "Just don't understand it, LOL 😂", or that I'm once again, "Just trolling" (that seems to be a common, lame retort on this site for some reason).

You literally don't understand the Hierarchy of Needs and seem to have some chip on your shoulder that is preventing you from understanding it. In summary, without reproduction, the human species will die out. It's a basic human need.

@AdaXI What a load... Why don't you take your self-absorbed view of life and get humble... in a hurry. Every scientific fact is not suddenly disposable because it doesn't pass your age test of being modern. The one thing that has never changed is human behaviour. The Hierarchy of Needs isn't intended to to accommodate a single person's desires, wants, and silly schoolgirl notions.

The basic human needs has withstood the test of time and no matter how much you want to present yourself as some kind of modern day spin-meister, your rant doesn't hold up. This crazy idea because some remote tribe you read about or conjured up doesn't know what clothes are and lives their lives in perfect bliss lacks scientific merit to even discuss. If that is the foundation defence of your silly position, then I'm not sure this is even worth your time, let alone mine.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs stands the test of time... even today. Your idea that because it was developed in the 1940's it HAS to be obsolete doesn't make it so. For someone like you, what more do you need?

@MarkPaul Look I've made my point it's a 'theory' it's not a 'science' and the method in which it was created is completely unscientific. It's also flawed because it doesn't take into account people come from different cultures and social backgrounds and most of his research was done using just a hand full of people as examples. Like back in the 1940s everyone got married, woman were just good little housewives that banged out a couple of kids so it was really quite easy to make this nice little over simplified pyramid chart.

Which look it is what it is, I've deleted my other comment seen as seemed to of triggered you and if you're happy with Maslow's little chart then I'm happy with it too because I've really got better things to be doing than falling out with you over a pyramid chart.

You take care.

The pyramid is accurate; however the examples may be different for people. The physiological needs really are a no brainer though. It seems silly to negate the entire theory based on one example.
Every step is necessary for the ordinary person, I skipped every level and now at the 5th Level 😁
@SimplyLogicalDiscipline But for those of us who are extraordinary... I see your point ☺️

It's actually pretty simple which is why it's lasted so long.
This theory was published in 1943.
And at that time many societies were still arranging marriages for their offspring because they were looking to ensure their own survival !
The last Work House wasn't closed until 1931 just to give you some idea of a sociological timeframe reference here, and as the second world War was in full flow and it became obvious which class in society was actually affecting change, that gives you some idea of context

Reproduction means getting your rocks off in this context.
@GlitterEater Okay, but can you compare "getting your rocks off" with air and water? Theoretically a person could live without sex, but they can't live without food.
GlitterEater · 36-40, F
@Bellatrix2083 They are all satisfying physiological needs, meaning things that your body requires or really wants.
That is not the pyramid that I was taught in school. There are a bunch online.
@Spoiledbrat Yes, you might have a point there. One of the problems with the idea is the fact that one can find variations of the "pyramid"; they're not all consistent, they're not all the same.
It's just means it's the need to work right and feel safe and abled bodied and then to connect with others such as family, however that may be. I think you're over thinking it. Esteem comes from success and being liked. That wins you respect. Self actualization just means to realize one's dream or capabilities. Which would be hard to do if you don't first have your basic needs met
my question is why do you think you know better than the literal hierarchy of needs
It certainly seems a little generalized and not fully applicable to every individual. But then again, what doesn't have exceptions?

This is some updated version, and not the original by Maslow. Owning property and reproduction, ect was not part of his version.
Where does it say anything about having children ? But I think for those who want them, it's a need.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
I've always felt this pyramid could use a little tweaking.
reproduction is the purpose of human bodies

it is not a need
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
Perhaps they are politely saying sex
DDonde · 31-35, M
He means fucking
@DDonde As someone else also said, but why is this right at the bottom, alongside air and water? It should be higher up the triangle.
DDonde · 31-35, M
@Bellatrix2083 I don't know, but if I had to guess, maybe because it's a more primal animalistic impulse like the other things on the bottom level.
