If you buy them freshly roasted from a street vendor, they are too hot to handle. If you do manage to entice them out of their shells, they taste lovely.

@Thevy29 well, it's like if you cooked just about any mild nut. it tastes... okay. cook 'em, chop 'em up, put them in a recipe... like Christmas dressing/stuffing

@SW-User I've only had experience with Pine Nuts since members of the family are allergic to peanuts and almonds and the like.

@Thevy29 in comparison, pine nuts are much more soft and buttery tasting. chestnuts are a bit more fibrous and less creamy tasting. i'd say you aren't missing much. pine nuts are better

Softer than other nuts.
Slightly chewy.
And much sweeter.
Back before we had central heating and coal fired we used to buy them regularly during the winter and roast them in the hearth under the grate.

I've always wanted to try roasted chestnuts at the holiday season.....I've yet to do it though. I've heard they are very good.
