If i put someone down as a reference, should i tell them?

I really dont want to bc im embarrassed by the new job im applying for and im scared she'll judge me (even tho shes really sweet and amazing). They probably wont even call right? Do they even call references? I dont want to tell her and then they dont even call and i dont get the job and i just look stupid...but i dont want them on the, off chance, to call and shes just dumbfounded bc i didnt let her know...ugh I hate references, i really didnt want to put anyone but it required one from a previous job 🙄😠
Yes. If your CV shows the right qualifications and experience, they will definitely call her and check.
References are not a formality. They are needed because people lie and there needs to be a means of checking.
It would be wise to tell her no matter what you fear she might think.
Actually Kruger is right: "Never put someone down as a reference without getting their permission first. Also make sure that they will give you a good reference."

Never put someone down as a reference without getting their permission first. Also make sure that they will give you a good reference.

When I was hiring people, calling up references and having them either a) give someone a lukewarm reference at best or b) have no idea who I was talking about happened a lot more than I would have imagined.

Yes you should and assume the potential employer will check 🙂

It’s always good to ask them and let them know
It is common courtesy to notify that person. Imagine getting a call suddenly and trying to compose a practical, realistic reference spontaneously. Always ask permission first. I have refused to give references to people I cannot honestly vouch for.
Places that ask for references generally contact the references. Always get permission before using someone as a reference.

I personally think it's dumb because people don't put down a potential bad reference.

Depends on the job you’re applying to imo. Some dumb jobs ask for references but don’t check.. retail fast food etc.. if it’s a professional job, then yes ask your reference

Yeah, I was going to ask that person before you put them down as a reference that’s a good thing to do because they might not give it to you

they often call your references
best to give them a heads up so they can come up with two or three points about you that they like

I never called a reference. To me, the applicant wouldn't list anyone they didn't expect would sing their glorious praises anyway.

yes please ask before you add the person to make sure they say something nice. if you catch them off guard, who knows what they will say
You should let them know do they’re not surprised. Some reference checks are fairly extensive.
Subsumedpat · 36-40, M
Should let them know so if they get a call they have a chance to think about what to say.

Absolutely. You don't want to lose the friend on top of the job.

Well the game can’t start if the referee doesn’t turn up
Fluffybull · F
You ASK someone before you give their name as a reference.
