If you were a lawyer, would you rather prosecute people or defend people?

Well I've got call on Sunday the 28th to see if I have to be in court on Monday for jury duty and I'm really not looking forward to it..
Paloma · 26-30, F
@rage34 No, but I kinda want to. I don't think my job would pay me to take off for it though
rage34 · 36-40, M
@Paloma yeah I got my letter in the mail to go and I was like u got to be kidding lol
bhatjc · 46-50, M
@rage34 Just finished jury duty. Is it a call in

Defend.
But I'm more interested in truth than just winning an argument. It's a flaw with our legal and parliamentary system.
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@puck61 You assume that everyone is guilty and lying? The innocent deserve protection. The victims deserve prosecution of the guilty, not the innocent.

And the design of our legal system requires that both guilty and innocent are defended appropriately, because in the (flawed) process it is essential that two sides of the argument are wrestled with. After all, police get it wrong for many reasons.
@Abstraction Of course not, but even a judge will often advise a defendant to plead 'not guilty'. It is 'procedure'.
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@puck61 it's great when someone pleads guilty. It's called taking responsibility

Defend
Everyone according to the law is innocent until proven guilty. In a criminal court this would be beyond a reasonable doubt
Law breaking isn't black and white either but with gradations, and mitigating circumstances
The idea too is for all lawyers to be impartial

Defend but I'd have very few clients because if I felt someone was guilty I wouldn't even consider taking their case
Paloma · 26-30, F
@SW-User You'd have to pay off all the debt from law school somehow though!
SW-User
@Paloma I'd have to get a second job for sure
smmartydude · 41-45, M
Prosecute....I wouldn't want to ever have to defend someone who I know to be guilty.
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
Part of my job when I worked as an attorney was doing defense in civil cases pertaining to real estate and mortgages (representing the homeowners rather than the banks).
IAMMONARAHIMI · 36-40, F
Defend the innocent, cause you can defend anyone, but yet never really know who is the innocent ones
Hambone · 70-79, M
Defend. I can't see myself arguing in favor of taking someone's freedom.
I actually plan on being a public prosecutor hopefully
SW-User
Defend. But totally depends on the case.
Vetrov · 61-69, M
The only help I am planning to bring...is to the Prosecution

@Hugosfbay Wow! Not everyone can be friends with an intangible! Just kidding. Do you mean an immigrant or an immigration lawyer?

@Hugosfbay I don't randomly shoot people, but California immigration lawyers did unhook someone who 'did' randomly shoot someone! I would imagine they must have played a part in that travesty. The USA is made up of immigrants, but there really needs to be some kind of reform. The winking and shrugging has gone too far in my opinion. Typical right wing response of course.

Defo prosecute. I couldn't live with myself if I got someone off who deserved to be in prison - especially if they went on to hurt someone.
nedkelly · 61-69, M
prosecute - no way I could defend a child molester - Hillary Clinton was proud of defending a paedophile
Paloma · 26-30, F
@nedkelly She was!?
nedkelly · 61-69, M
@Paloma In 1975, Hillary Clinton agreed to defend a man named Thomas Alfred Taylor. He was 41 at the time and had been accused of luring a 12 year old girl into his car and raping her.

In the tape, which has never before been released, she explains that she used a legal technicality to plead down the charges on Taylor to a lesser charge. He was convicted of “child fondling” instead of rape and served only 10 months in prison.

What’s also clear from the tape is that Clinton knew that Taylor was guilty of raping a 12 year old girl and she wasn’t required to take the case in the first place. She took it as a favor to a friend.

I'd rather prosecute. It see.s easier. There are just SO many stupid people out there...
I'd rather be a prosecutor. Lawyers generally get horrible people out of trouble. Prosecutors generally give people what they have coming. It stands to reason. Naturally right wing reactionary authoritarians like myself would be more into sadistic prosecution than masochistic defense ! Suffer bitch! Suffer! The system hungers! Feed it!
