As a pedestrian have you ever

Been stopped by law enforcement?

I walked three blocks to a convenient store this afternoon. Watchin traffic I crossed 4 lanes but didn't use a cross walk. Was stopped in the parking lot. "Trying to warn about road fatalities" Then asked for Id which I hadn't brought with me. Name, DOB, SS# my address. Then he ran my name. Took my photo.

For crossing the street.
In the States there are no laws that require you to show your ID, even to a cop. Let's put that in context. Nearly half of the states in America have so-called "stop-and-identify laws." Under these laws, police can legally require a person to reveal their identity if the police have a "reasonable suspicion" that the person has committed a crime. Still, if a cop stops you, just ask if you are under arrest. If they say no, you are not required by law to tell them who you are or show them identification. Walk away because you're legally free to go.

@stratosranger I get that. Even tho' I'd probably cave lol. But technically I did break a law.
Technically, yes. So there is that. But even with no ID he’d be pretty stupid to arrest you for jay walking. And a failure to provide ID is amendable in court by just showing your ID to a judge. And he’d probably rip the cop a new one for wasting their time (if he even showed up, and if he didn’t the whole thing would likely be expunged). Sounds like he saw a pretty girl, had a reason to interact with you but quickly realized you were not taken in by his uniform, his swagger and his Old Spice cologne 😆 @Punxi

@stratosranger Haha... I'm the one WITH a dude that knows this stuff. I'd be like Yeah! Now what!! Lol 😎🤘

well, that's a touch too far, wtf?

and i have been stopped as a pedestrian, but to be fair i was crossing through a shopping mall parking lot at 3am, directly adjacent to my neighborhood. they came after me in an unmarked car. i ran, scaled a privacy fence and got jerked down off the fence by my clothing. i realized they were the police about that time, because they had a flood light on me. when they asked me why i ran, i said it was because they were two men in a car chasing me on foot at night. they let me walk to my house. no name or ID, which would have had most of the other info
SW-User
@Punxi girl, they freak me out every bit as much as criminals. my heart was thumpin' a million...
Punxi · 26-30, F
@SW-User Feel ya. I like safety. A dead bolt or in the company of those I trust. Cops and creeps just don't cut it with me. Plus situations like yours hang around a long time in your head. Too many od'em and now your reaction becomes instinctual. And that is just Fed up in my opinion.

Good Lord! The Stasi are already here. That’s social credit score stuff. Never give your SS number to anyone who comes up to you like that. He could be an imposter. You have the right not to give all that information, especially if you are not arrested.
@Punxi I’d keep my eyes peeled for that cop. If you see him again, get his picture
Punxi · 26-30, F
@stratosranger Probably not bad advice at all.
@Punxi If he is in his car, get the unit number. Next time you are in the spot he stopped you, look around for cameras. If there are any take note of where they are. This is just in case your identity is stolen. You will at least have proof he spoke to you when he asked for your SS#.
Dshhh · M
often,, but then I was um darker, than most people in that cty
Punxi · 26-30, F
@Dshhh Damn...that sucks. Sorry to hear. 😔
Dshhh · M
@Punxi it is part of the world we live in. I belive we can grow past that, but DAYUM it takes time
I was a teen then to, so double trouble.
and lets not assume Mr police man Might have been "creeping"
if you Do encounter him again? you may want to reach out to your police board
or you may live in a place without that
Punxi · 26-30, F
@Dshhh Sad but unfortunately true. I can't begin to even know what that like. But my empathy is yours. Any I just may do that. 👌
Spumoni · 46-50, M
I got a warning for that same thing in Klamath Falls, OR one afternoon. Lol same thing.
Punxi · 26-30, F
@Spumoni Kinda spooky. Like makin this huge data base...pin pointing folks.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Punxi You might have to register on the national jay walking offender database. 😄
Torsten · 36-40, M
I have been stopped by law enforcement a bit often. Once even stopped due to apparently matching the description of a suspect they were after. That was fun convincing them I was not who they were seeking
Punxi · 26-30, F
@Torsten I think maybe that excuse or reasoning is one they are taught. "Fitting the description of". Not the first time I've heard it used. 🤷‍♀️
CestManan · 46-50, F
Jesus how petty and bored are they?

Do they really see a 20 something year old woman just crossing the street and think, "Hmm, she looks like a real outlaw, we better investigate"
Punxi · 26-30, F
@CestManan Crasy right!! I can kinda see mabye..pill up..."stay outta the road"....had me stand in front of his vehicle...bout ten minutes. 🤷‍♀️ Wonder what folks were thinkin lol
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Punxi He was probably just trying to fill some quota for contacts. Honestly it is kind of disgusting he even bothered beyond "stay out of the road".
Pfuzylogic · M
I had a cop stalk my car and then pulled me over to talk with me but I scared the shit out of him so he ran! 🤣
Pfuzylogic · M
@Punxi The cop was lazy. I had someone smack the back of my car and then took off. I went by a motel where a cop was bored started stalking me. When I was stopped immediately I said.
“I am so glad to see you! Someone just hit my car and I need someone to report this to!”
He smiled, did a 180 to his car and gtfo before he had to do some work!
🤣🤣🤣
Punxi · 26-30, F
@Pfuzylogic Ha!! Damn! He went an got a donut.
Pfuzylogic · M
@Punxi He wasn’t as fat as the cops in the 70s. They were heart attacks waiting to happen! He was about 25 pounds overweight though. The look on his face which I was prepared to view…priceless!
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
No, I have never even heard about anyone being fined for it but when I'm about to cross the road where I know I shouldn't and see a police car nearby, I always wait for them to get lost first. Just to be sure.
SW-User
i was fined for jaywalking 3 times in my life .. it was seriously faster than taking the overhead walk bridge
Punxi · 26-30, F
@SW-User See its stuff like that that seem to me they are just wrackin up revenue.
SW-User
@Punxi i think so too, like come on, we are not blind we are adults we can cross the road better than the chicken who tried and got ran over ..

But they do have a point, if they keep allowing it, bad things can happen to chicken minded people
Punxi · 26-30, F
@SW-User They certainly do. Trying to see both sides. I am. My side is of course quite stubborn lol
SinlessOnslaught · 26-30, M
And there weren't any crosswalks within a reasonable distance?
SinlessOnslaught · 26-30, M
@Punxi 😡 Walking is a natural human ability. If there are no nearby crosswalks, and you're being careful, you should NOT be detained AT ALL. You were not in the wrong.
Punxi · 26-30, F
@SinlessOnslaught I certainly was in no danger. Not a highway. This dude was all business however. Crazy.
SinlessOnslaught · 26-30, M
@Punxi This is the problem I have with infrastructure. 100 years ago we built a road for cars. When that got filled, we built another. And we did it over and over until we have a shitty system where we keep building roads that just keep getting filled.

We need to build pathways for ALL KINDS OF TRANSPORTATION. Not just cars.

The world is becoming hostile toward people who have to walk. Which is all of us, sometimes.

Stop the bullshit. Make all forms of transportation viable. Not JUST cars.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
You don’t have to ID if there is no crime.
Most municipalities DO have jay walking laws. It’s a BS excuse to stop someone but technically they can stop you for it. @MrBrownstone
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@stratosranger It’s not a crime. It’s a infraction
@MrBrownstone While jaywalking is considered a minor infraction in most states, additional charges may be levied against the offending pedestrian if the act disrupts traffic or causes a motor vehicle accident.
Ramrod · 46-50, M
No i have not,but i would be really pissed if it ever did happen to me.
Punxi · 26-30, F
@Ramrod Very odd. May have been my imagination...but it seemed every passing car had eyes on us. 🥺
Ramrod · 46-50, M
@Punxi Isn't it fun being in the limelight ?????
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
WTf for jaywalking wow! Meanwhile crackheads light up and watch him
Punxi · 26-30, F
@BackyardShaman Haha! Hey they stand along side of this place a drink all day. 🤷‍♀️
Elessar · 26-30, M
Nope. But I also know someone who got a speeding ticket while on his bicycle, so..
MrsRachelEvans · 31-35, F
A pedestrian can cross anyway here. No policeman would do anything.
Punxi · 26-30, F
@MrsRachelEvans I'd hope so. Only about the billionth time I've done so I'd say.
MellyMel22 · F
That’s ridiculous 🤬
Punxi · 26-30, F
@MellyMel22 I thought so. Outta all of it...it was that I felt intimidated. And afraid. In broad daylight on my way to buy a coffee. 🤷‍♀️
MellyMel22 · F
@Punxi What a bastard 😒

lipstickguy · 61-69, M
his chance to stop a pretty girl
not tryna be rude but maybe he thought you might be a prostitute or drug pusher
Foreverconfused · 56-60, F
No, but there are crosswalks, those are required by law
HannahSky · F
Use the crosswalk next time
My sister once got a jaywalking ticket in the city for $250. Some of the supervisors have been trying to get such tickets abolished, but since SF is kind of known for pedestrian deaths, I’m not sure when that would happen.
Punxi · 26-30, F
@bijouxbroussard Oh my! On several notes there. Suppose I should be grateful for not having received one. Seems some cities may add that as revenue. Like speed traps. 🤔
SW-User
Damn. Police here don't stop you for stuff like that
Punxi · 26-30, F
@SW-User Never happened to me here either. But have at times seen folks standing there like I did. No car. 🤷‍♀️
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@SW-User Here if they are in a car with a dashboard cam and it catches something like this they must take action or they'll be in trouble. My father got a ticket when he crossed the railroad crossing on a warning signal on a bike while the train was still too far. They almost apologized to him that they had to fine him because of the cam. 😆
