Have eliminated forced inspections for private automobiles backed by state law, if you want to get your car inspected you can if you don’t then the state can’t fine you.
I always thought it was a bit of a scam to force fairly new cars to have inspections every year, it seems more like another revenue stream for the state….
Does your state have forced inspections?

I have owned a car in Wisconsin and Minnesota, neither of which has state inspections. But I grew up in New York, and I remember my dad taking cars in for inspections there.

We did live in North Carolina for several months. The car had issues with the cooling system, and one mechanic jerry-rigged a fix where the engine fan simply was on all the time. He said it was good for a while, but it would never pass inspection. I told him I didn't mind, as I was not never going to register the car in North Carolina.

A friend of mine from Pennsylvania complained that you could fail inspection for the tiniest of things. It does seem to me that inspections CAN be overkill in practice, even if a good idea in theory.

Yes and I support it. Doesn’t cost much and finds some important issues. It’s not safe for anyone to have people driving around on bald tires and worn out brakes.

Yes. I like I always say it’s more of a money thing. Because many states don’t have it and it’s obviously not a problem. I believe only 12 states now have it.
I say enforce inspections. Is it gonna change the environment, no. But there are already so many unreasonable and inconvenient things that cars and our poor infrastructure cause and we don't push back. We just let the government have their money at the cost of our quality of life and our environment. Why stop there? Enforce emissions inspections.

This is coming from a person who usually doesn't appreciate a "f!ck it" attitude.

In 'theory' its a valid practice. The cold states use and excessive amt of salt on the roads during winters and poorly made cars simply rot away as a result of them.

My province had that for the longest time. It was more a money grab than anything.

Yes. RI and MA both have those laws, that and Blue Laws.

New is good for 5 years, after that every year. Free at the state inspection or pay for private.

Some vehicles qualify for self inspection. These can receive citations for unsafe conditions, so it's not a free pass.
