i watch a lot of true crime:

dateline, 20/20, 48 hours...not ID.

but i have noticed..there is a narrative of black people often being the perpetrators of violent crime.

do you believe this is a deliberate narrative on the part of media, with the intent to divide?

or..do you think it is mostly representative..

orrr..do you think the stories are chosen solely on the intrigue of said stories?

I love true crime too. My experience is the same as most of the statistics. People generally crime against people who look like they do. Interracial crime is actually not the norm. And that's usually what I see in the crime shows I watch. More times than not I see family members hurting each other or people who started off friends.

@SW-User it's crazy how a murderer of one would be super kind to others at times..sometimes crimes of passion occur, unfortunately. im not sure any of us could say, with 100% certainty, that we wouldnt do something wrong in the "right" circumstance

@foldedunfolding we're all capable of it at some level
in this state, whites, blacks, and hispanics are well represented in prison for violent acts. And there are very few folks of Asian, East Indian or Middle Eastern descent in for violent acts despite a fairly large population of them. I have worked in the prison system here for 33 yrs (mostly as a Case Analyst) and I have seen a very large sample size. Cant speak to what goes on in other states though.

@MayorOfCrushtown it's kinda a chicken or egg scenario perhaps? if you are of the most imprisoned population, it may be your perspective that imprisonment is modern day slavery, and that most law enforcement focus is on you. if you are of another race, you may think the opposite: "why would we consider them criminals if crimes werent committed"? hard questions.

So you mentioned it is true crime....

So if its a narrative, then the producers are purposely skewing common, well worn, historical data about what race and gender commits the most amount of violent crimes by a large margin.

In this day and age, that's unlikely and in my experience is the exact opposite of the narrative being pushed about Black crime now in the 2020's.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@SumKindaMunster to clarify: you believe it is a skewed and intentional narrative?

I don't recall seeing any episodes of 20/20 or 48 hours, where the perpetrator was black.

@Northwest oh man, may not be looking hard enough!

@foldedunfolding OK, I looked into 20/20, the first 6 episodes of 2023:

1. AJ Armstrong - 16 year-old black kid, accused of killing his parents: Antonio Armstrong Sr. (former football player) and and Dawn Armstrong, He was acquitted twice. Story was selected because of the Football angle.

2. Horror in Idaho: The Student Murders - white victims, white suspect

3. What the Little Girl Saw: white suspect, white victim

4. New Year's Evil: white suspect, white victim

5. Kill or be killed: white suspect, female, white victim

6. The kill list: white guy accused of killing his white wife

Do you remember that show where they'd trap the pedophiles? I thought that was pretty bad tbh. Some of those guys killed themselves.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@originnone oh damn..well, the host was a complete hypocrite as far as sexual sin was concerned..not to say he was a pedo. i think the thoughts of today are that pedos are the worst of worst, and are therefore free game. but..IS there redemption? SHOULD there be redemption?
originnone · 61-69, M
@foldedunfolding It's an unpopular opinion, but I think there has to be something.....
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
The media skews overwhelmingly liberal, so I doubt their narrative is served by that. I do think they LOVE to point out alleged "differences" to divide and conquer, yes, I believe that with every fiber of my being.

Really, though, in TV there's a saying "if it bleeds it leads", so that is usually the criterion. There's also "it smells, but it sells!"

I would not look at any MSM show as representative of anything. They are largely bastards. They'd sell their souls for ratings and $$, and a lot of them have.
foldedunfolding · 41-45, F
@uncalled4 im sorry..not familiar with the meaning of MSM
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@foldedunfolding Main stream media

@uncalled4 ohhh

Unfortunately black people are only 12% of the population but contribute to 50% of the crime 😔

Also I love true crime have you heard of the podcasts "crime junkie" or "Morbid"
