Why is/are there so many differences in American and British spellings for everyday items including grammar . Who is right?

KatyO83 · 36-40, F
We are. It's English from England obviously 🤣🤣🤣
Crazychick · 36-40, F
I'm British and I say our spellings are right, but I don't say American spellings are wrong. They are just alternative spellings, that's all.

Almost 300 years of separate history. Language is fluid thing.

As the Roman empire was in decline, there were such drastic regional variations in Latin that eventually, they became separate Romance languages.

Compared to that, the differences in English are not all that great.

Both are right within their own country.

@Carissimi So which English should I use when not in either country?
Carissimi · 70-79, F
Your choice. I interchange, and don’t worry about it. I’m English-American, and use both. @Harmony

Merriam-Webster made a dictionary in the US in the early 1800s and he's responsible for the colour -> color, centre -> center difference and those sorts of things. Interesting story.

Harmony · 31-35
