I Want to Improve My English

So I’m going to the USA in May as part of the au pair program. I never worked with kids before so I’m anxious about it. On top of this my English isn’t perfect and the idea of people not understanding my thick accent also makes me anxious!
I think my writing is strong but I have difficulty expressing myself effectively while speaking.
Also. Be aware this is my first post here so bear with me! I leave you guys a morning selfie jaja.

I think you will do just fine. Don't be nervous and you will get better the more you are exposed to it :D

@Timelessdays the family I’m staying with does seem nice so I hope it is going to be just as you said:) they say they’re 15 minutes away from Washington DC.

@Sandrita I work in DC.

The metro area has a lot of immigrants and Spanish speakers.

Let me know if you need any advice about the area.

Why the us they don't speak proper English come to England
impressionist · 70-79, M
All the more reason to learn and not the American version of english

Oh well the best of luck im sure you will be fine

You’re going to do just fine here. Just don’t be embarrassed or ashamed if we ask you to repeat yourself, and remember that you know more languages than almost any American. Remember too that you already know more languages than most Americans. Oh, and don’t worry, your English will get better while you’re here. How long are you planning on staying in the United States?
Sandrita · 26-30, F
@insomniac thank you for your encouraging words. It’s the same my parents tell me as far as knowing more language than most Americans but many Americans can speak more languages too.
The program is for a year and then I have to come back home to finish my university. This was just a way of me to improve my English and see the US which has been one of my dreams:)

hope you enjoy it here. oh, and be prepared for a lot of idioms (common expressions that may not translate into your native language) - and don't be afraid to ask us to explain it.
Sandrita · 26-30, F
@Newandimproved yes! I know some I learned online but I bet there are so many. I’m going to ask everything needed:)

hope all goes well with your new job and new county...

I moved to Germany from England and the language was a struggle for me, you will meet lots of great people... but don't let the odd one or two spoil the adventure...

I read years ago that people looking to learn conversational American English would watch soap operas with the closed caption so they could see and hear the conversation

Breathe easy.... you got this. Kids aren’t that scary, they will appreciate you for being yourself the most. Good luck! 🍀 🌟
