Just because Jewish is both a religion and ethnicity does not mean that the Israeli government governs based on religious principles. Don't assume that and don't forget that 20% of Israeli citizens are Arab Muslim. Another 5% of the population is people of religions other than Jewish or Muslim.

If the Israli government was a one based on religion, having 25% of its citizens as something other than Jewish would be intolerable. Muslims never would have been granted citizenship.

Iran on the other hand does have its political authority derive from religious authority. All other religions are heavily persecuted. More than 95% to 99% of Iran's citizens are Muslim.

Israel's government is secular. It has no religious authority. It is a republic. You assume too much.
