@SunshineGirl Thank you! I was in Paignton last summer. Went more or less past the model village along the road towards Teignmouth, never thought to go in. Perhaps I'll go this summer.
@ninalanyon My dad took me there every year when he was based in Plymouth, so I have fond memories. It's in the nicer part of Torquay. Kents Cavern (one of the oldest prehistoric settlements in Britain) and St Marychurch (a pretty, pedestrianised high street) are also close by.
Compared to some places I have been the whole of Torquay is nicer. The centre of Mansfield which I visited today is a dump despite being full of quite fine buildings.
@ninalanyon I have affection for the whole of Torbay, but the town centres have struggled for as long as I can remember. Beside the deprivation and drugs there is a fair amount of local pride and spirit which always helps. I was last there in March last year. Paignton looked better than I have ever seen it, but Torquay was a bit frayed at the edges.
