Toilet paper... help!!

We've moved into a house with septic system so we have to take care what goes into it. Blockages are really no fun at all. And I know that because I have to deal with them when they occur.

So suddenly I've noticed that our household of 5 people is using 2 rolls of 180 sheets per day. That means 360 sheets/5 people = 72 per sheets per person per day. Like... what? I can't comprehend that. I don't want to be fussy about things, but isn't that a little ridiculous?

Am I missing something here?

Being on a septic system isn't relevant to blockages. The waste isn't supposed to go any further than the tank, and blockages occur between the house and the tank so if you are getting blockages you'd still be getting blockages if there was no septic system. Brands of toilet paper shouldn't matter either since all toilet paper is designed to go down the toilet.

If you're getting clogs it could be because of the amount of paper being flushed at once, or it could be because someone is flushing something that should not have been flushed such as paper towels. It's also possible the plumbing itself is iffy, not enough drop or too much drop could cause that.

The tanks themselves need to be pumped ever so many years, my best guess is ever 5 years would be safe although I'm aware of tanks that have gone much longer. At some point the tank will fill up regardless of what brand of paper you use, and if it starts running out into the field lines you have a major problem.
@robb65 I do seem to remember some brands of toilet tissue being labled as suitable for septic systems. But thats a long time ago..😷

@robb65 Yes, i'm sure you're right. The earlier blockages we had weren't due to paper. Good to rule that out then.
Still... how much paper does someone need?

I use approximately 142 sheets of single ply paper per day. It is super thin. Many brands of toilet paper are much thicker.

@4meAndyou You need to get a bidet !!😊
4meAndyou · F
@Teslin I live in an apartment building, but I will definitely tell management that you said I need one...🤣🤣🤣

@4meAndyou Yeah the thin ones are false economy

Use toilet paper that dissolves.
No. My wife cant seem to use less than her height in toilet tissue for anything. I suppose I should be delighted she isnt a basketball player..😷
@Mamapolo2016 ??? Four toilets, two people..Which environment did youi want??😷
@whowasthatmaskedman I meant you.
@Mamapolo2016 Shall we say that while I do the cooking now, in no way do I contribute any need for her to consume the quantities she does and always has..😷

YES, who counts sheets of toilet paper
SteelHands · 70-79, M
@SW-User Anyone that was married to a woman that bought the most expensive and then expressed dismay at it getting used too quickly.

So I learned to make it my habit to use no more than 12 to 20 squares. Which if you're patient and fold it over itself instead of bunching it up is usually plenty enough for a three part doner.
Yes, toilet paper. And a good plunger. Oh and quality hip waders.

No way 5 people can 💩 enough to use 72 TP per day. But u may need to do what my grandfather use to do at his house. U couldn't flush whips and TP at his house. He just had a really old septic system. So he kept a trashcan buy the toilet

@smileylovesgaming Yeah, nah. :)
SteelHands · 70-79, M
It shouldn't be more than a roll and a half a day.

Someone needs to stop going gonzo on the rolls.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
If it's three ply you should tell everyone they can use half they use.

@MarmeeMarch About 5 months ago. Blockages aren't happening - it's just my fear all this paper will do so. Apparently unwarranted.

Someone's not missing something 😄

Could go to those devious commercial systems that break after a few sheets. Of course you might be found in the septic yourself after a 'revolution.'
Bowenw · 61-69, M
Consider a bidet toilet seat.
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@Bowenw We're on tank water. We have to limit how much we use.

Everyone gets one roll per month! Bring your own roll 🧻
FloorGenAdm · 51-55, M
I say don't ever use the garbage disposal and do a sink flush once a month.
Need to use water

Sounds like you've got a situation like we have. Here's how we dealt with it.

1. Establish a "one flush per wipe" rule. That cuts down on the amount of toilet paper being flushed at once.

2. Try to get everybody to limit themselves to four squares per wipe.

3. Look up septic tank friendly toilet paper brands. They dissolve more easily and biodegrade faster.

That is absolutely ridiculous. 2 rolls a day sounds like someone had tacobell
MoonaNorth86 · 36-40, F
How cheap was it
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@MoonaNorth86 It's good quality!
MoonaNorth86 · 36-40, F
@Abstraction ok good
Musicman · 61-69, M
That is definitely a lot of toilet paper per day. Two rolls??? Seriously??? You may seriously want to consider the type of paper you are using. In a RV they have to use a special toilet paper that disintegrates easily. Besides the fact that your family uses to much I would recommend looking into RV toilet paper. Your septic system will appreciate you.
