Do people still have placemats, etc. on their dining tables?

I just got a new dining table (2.35 m x 1.0 m from Ikea) and I've never had placemats in the past so go thinking how best to long-term protect the table top.

Do people still use placemats?

Are they called something different and/or serve a different function in other countries?

I don't have tablecloths. Not sure I want to.

The table is multi-function. It has my HP Laserjet printer at end end, so that sits on the bare top. The middle to other end is the 'human use' end for eating, etc.

My dining table dates from about 1685 according to a specialist antiquarian. I hired him to improve the polish on it.
Heavy oak, gate-leg.

Certainly I protect the surface with place mats.
@emmasfriend Has he set a value on your table??

We do. Not essential, but sensible I think if you are using hot plates. (Don't like eating hot meals off cold plates!)

I use placemats and coasters on my tables, but don't bother with tablecloths.

Yes, we`ve used place mats and trivets on the dining room table.

Yes, we use seasonal placemats since most meals are only my wife and I.

Placemats look much better than tablecloths, particularly if you don't want to completely cover up a nice wooden table.

Not proper place-mats, but I do improvise protection for the table.

My wife puts out place mats and settings for each season or holiday

I do. Protect the wood of my table.

Yes, we have placemats and coasters!

Bold of you to assume I have a dining room table. Or a dining room.

@RosaMarie My place is small, so it's not really any kind of 'formal' dining room - moreso a space that gets used primarily for that life function and similar life functions.
