I think a gift for an old-ish adult should typically be something consumable, novel, and fun. Ya figure, he could buy something if he wanted it, and if he doesn't want it, you're just creating clutter. So get him something that he wouldn't think to get himself, and that won't be here in 6 months anyway, if he doesn't particularly like it.

Dads just want peace and quiet and a box of Belgian cookie can hide from their wife and eat as they wish.
This can get very inappropriate or very adorable.
If your dad is a music fan, get him a fancy dap and load it up with his favorite music.

Why not a old record player and some records? Something will go up in value.
@HumanEarth that's variable. If he values that kind of thing and it's his vibe sure, but basing gifts on potential future value is not a great idea.
For me I'd take the convenience of a dap over a record player. She's gotta know her dad's preferences.

Get into his world. What hobbies does your father like and buy something in that area he will actually love and use or wear thinking of your gracious gift every time he uses or wears the item.
