I gather sticks, stones and shells and make things out of them. I sing while I gather. If I like the words I scribble them down and write a poem from them later.
Drawing or doodling, intuitive painting, making collages.
The thrift store usually has some sort of craft supplies and if I see something cool I decide what I want to make out of it.
Right now I'm painting my drums with UV paint and making my own Xmas cards. And building a stick fort with my son.
My favorite hobby is stretching and dancing.

@SW-User Do you keep an art journal for your doodles? I thought that might be fun and creative.
SW-User
@cherokeepatti I have so many sketchbooks and journals. It's madness 😂
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User you know I’m the sort of person that loves to look through such things. It’s great when you have a creative outlet like that.

You can take up one of MY hobbies, which is free...researching your own family history and building an online family tree. There is a free website called Family Search.com, and it is free to all. You don't have to belong to their church to build your family tree on that site. They have archives with research records, and so on.

Knitting is always good and absorbing. I have five different items on the go . . I am never truly finished 🙂

Crocheting can be inexpensive. I made these stress ball because I was bored one time. Took plastic grocery bags and cut each one in a continuous strip and started crocheting them. Stuffed them with more bags. Didn’t cost me a penny because I had an abundance of bags that were piling up. These would also be fun to toss around like Nerf balls with young children in the house.

I chose woodworking and drawing, but crocheting/knitting is a good choice also.
Inexpensive, and keeps your mind and hands occupied and focused. Friend of mine has gotten really good, selling her blankets for a hundred or more a piece.

I wish I learned knitting and crocheting. For me organizing my stuff helps. Exercise helps to a certain degree. Walking in nature is nice.

Can start collecting rocks for free. There's never really a shortage of them. And always something cool to see
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@icedsky Barite roses. In some areas in this county and the next county they find large clusters of them. Farmers plowing their field would find them. Had to be vein running through the property though. . One old farmer in the 60’s and 70’s set up a stand and was selling them for side money. He had some huge ones that had perfect petals on them that my aunt bought. There was another farmer in the next county that we got pecans from on the halves…he sold these barite rocks that were clusters of big bubbles. My aunt bought some of them from him as well.
icedsky · 51-55, M
@cherokeepatti Some of those do sell for big bucks. As they are getting rarer. Not any barite roses here in this neck of the woods. Barite crystals are common though. Blade shapes and some cubes.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@icedsky yes. I heard a local story and don’t know if it was true or not. In the late 1960’s a man drove from Oklahoma to California. He didn’t pay for gas. He would take a larger rose rock…sit it on the car dash and ask for a fill up. The attendant or owner would see that rose rock and ask about it and eventually it would be traded for a tank of gas. There was a small gift store in Noble, Oklahoma that sold rose rocks and rose rock decorative sculptures, t-shirts, and all kinds of rose-rock gifts etc. It stayed in business for 30 years until the owners retired.

@Purplerain78 You don't need hills to enjoy a walk in nature. And all you need to do is dress warm young lady !!
Get some hand and body warmers LOL.

@Teslin You appear to think I need to keep fit, lose weight or something 🤔
Teslin · M
@Purplerain78 No, you asked for inexpensive hobbies. This is what came to mind.

I love to hike. It's free and there are always trails to find. Some easy, some difficult.
But usually always enjoyable.

Decoupage, upcycling items that are headed for the landfill such as cardboard which can be made into a variety of artsy and whimsical items, decorating jars to make candle holders and other such items, felt items like dolls, animals, brooches, bears, keychains, book marks etc. Easy to cut out and whip-stitch the edges. A good hobby to do in the evenings while watching tv etc.

Some "ME" time
Purplerain78 · 46-50, F
@pdockal I never had it before my relationship break down. Tend not to when you have kids, especially if they have added needs to.
Learning to give myself care/attention and me time is very strange. I'd rather have my kids with me all the time if I'm being honest.

But it was in response to your question and situation
Maybe consider "ME" time from now on

@Musicman I second this. I've been a photographer since high school and it's still a satisfying hobby
