There can be physical symptoms such as losing a lot of weight without being on a diet...people often misunderstand those symptoms too.
People are afraid of mental illness because it raises the specter of us not having control over our own minds (which we don't).

Probably, it would be more easily diagnosed too. Mental illness especially are very difficult to treat in this aspect because being as they manifest entirely in someone's mind, each and every victim has a slightly different concept of it. It's different for everyone and that requires a huge range of different treatments and resources to fix it.
Some people think depression isn't real. They don't realize what it does to you emotionally or physically. You're not being lazy. You are fighting a very tough state of mind that doesn't care what you should be doing. It zaps your energy and your desire to live life fully.

@Underconstruction: mental illness is all "craziness" that's the stigma its been given by people who don't suffer from it or attempt to understand.
