Too me tai chi is good for the mind it clears your thoughts its fitness for the brain not typical gym fodder.

Supesun · 56-60, M
Depends if your into all the spiritual stuff that goes with it. I did it for a while and the guy kept banging on about a load of other spiritual stuff so I left. Imo you can’t beat a conventional gym.
Supesun · 56-60, M
Exactly. That’s what I thought when I tried it. If you can hack all that stuff then fine but as a fitness tool I think there’s better stuff out there. @FaeLuna

@Supesun Yeah, I know. I just feel weird at gyms for some reason.
NodandaWink · 51-55, M
@FaeLuna I have a lot of experience and it is rare that the real instructors get religious. The want to teach Tai Chi not convert people.

Chi-Gung is similar - and amazing - definitely try the Tai Chi.
FaeLuna · 31-35, F
@sometimeslonelytoo I don't think they offer Chi-Gung, but I'll definitely look further into it and see if there's somewhere else around.

Tai Chi is excellent for strength and flexibility but it won't help your cardio. Also I would suggest taking it at a real martial arts school. Too often the adult ed classes are just empty movements taught by someone who has no understanding of the martial applications. It is just mimicked motion. Without understanding you will not learn correct form and movement.

Tai Chi can be fun. It's using your body as resistance to build up strength and flexibility. It's like an artistic yoga. Try it.....consider it cross training. There are a lot of videos on Youtube that can lead you through some exercises and some you can download to your phone.

Good Luck

Its good. Mostly elder people do it here. 😬
FaeLuna · 31-35, F
@SW-User Hmm. I'll have to see what the demographic is around here. Not that there's anything wrong with elderly people, but it would be nice to have other people in my age range to ask for help.
NodandaWink · 51-55, M
@FaeLuna You never want to go to another student for help unless they have specifically been identified by your Sifu (Master/Teacher) as being an assistant. The movements of Tai Chi are subtle and but must be done properly.
you should take a kendo or akiodo or fencing class.:)

Give it a try.
