I’m a sitter at a hospital for elderly residents now.

There’s this adorable little lady I got to watch today because she gets a lot of anxiety when she’s alone which makes her get up to find someone and she’s a fall risk so I get to sit with her and keep her company to make sure she doesn’t. She likes to have her hand held and doesn’t want me to leave her side. I got to take her to the dining room tonight for dinner and when she was served she took a big bite of her sandwich. I asked her if it was good and she nodded her head yes at me vigorously with her cheek still full of food and it was one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen. 🥺 It’s really interesting to see how much we turn back into kids in our old age.

That’s so sweet of you to do that, so sad many have no one.
We should look after the elderly better.

My daughter was in hospital years ago, there was an elderly lady in the bed next to her, one time as I was sitting with my family, she’s started handing me written notes, 📝 she couldn’t speak because of an operation she’d had.
She told me no one visited her and how lonely she was, I sat with her trying to hide my tears and spoke to her for the remaining time.

Wouldn’t it be lovely if people adopted elderly as grandparents into families. 🥺

@Fairydust It is sad. I’ve gotten emotional a few times talking with my residents. Too many of them don’t get any visits from anyone and I get to be the only one they can see regularly. So I do everything I can to show them the love they simply don’t get otherwise. Your story reminds me of why every little thing I do for them. Whether it’s simply smiling and asking them how they are. Sitting to chat for a bit. Telling them how I happy I am too see them. These small things delight them so much they’re enthusiastic and eager to just interact. I think that’s because they’re so deprived emotionally. I’d like to think if many of them didn’t need such special physical care, then people would have big enough hearts to adopt them.

@RubySoo Aw, thanks Ruby! I haven’t been here long. A bit more than a month so far, but I’ve already been told by management I’m an excellent sitter. I’ve been having fun getting to know all the residents too. Some of them are so sweet and just love having someone to talk to. ♥

@Reject my mum in law is in hospital at the moment. Shes been there for 2 months so far, and will be hor a while yet. We go up 3 or 4 times a week. Its an hour each way, and hubs doesnt get home from work till gone 6pm. So its a long way.to go for short visit....but so important for her recovery she gets visitors.
But...if someone like yrself was able to visit with her...she would be over the moon. She loves to tell people about her life...especially things she did when she was young and adores talking.with younger people....especial guys!!
I'm sure she'd much rather a visit from someone like yrself than me!! 😂

@RubySoo I know it’s difficult but thank you for going to see her. I think it means a lot. I’d LOVE to sit with her! She sounds perfect honestly. My favorite residents are the ones who just like to talk to me about their life. I have a few I chat with who also like guys and I’m their favorite. 😄

@Matt85 Thank you for that. I think myself needs to hear it.
You'll find a few gems at the retirement home

@Reject thank you for giving me a option. You are truly a wonderful person for what you do.
Reject · 26-30, M
@ronisme1 Hey, I’m happy to. Thank you for all you’ve done as well. Just from this conversation and your age I can tell you’ve already been an important part of many lives. The fact that you still want to keep doing so also says a lot about your character. A lot of good.
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
@Reject thanks, i should have started early like you
before the pandemic our hospital ran a paws for patients program and it was amazing how the two interacted. my husband has been working to get the program reinstated

@saragoodtimes That is wonderful! We have a cute dog who is brought in sometimes. Even babies too. The residents love seeing both. It’s these little things that help a care facility feel less like a facility which is very important to their mental health.
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
@saragoodtimes when i had a surgery i had a visit from a very loving dog. It really raised
My spirits before my surgery

God bless you!

For so many elderly, even with advance Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Lewy Body, severe dementia, there is great joy to just be sat with unhurriedly, to hold their hand or just be with. You can see it with the smiles on their faces, or their calmness.
Reject · 26-30, M
@Heartlander You’re exactly right. No matter how much of ourselves we lose, our ability to understand love never leaves us. Sure, it might not be the love you knew, but it will always be the love you know.
Circle of life. 🙂

Nice to know there are people like you taking care of the elderly, one of our most undervalued resources.
Reject · 26-30, M
@OlderSometimesWiser It’s interesting how you called them a resource, but they absolutely are. There’s a lot you can get from your elders and I don’t mean the usual idea of wisdom people might have, but rather, the emotional fulfillment one can find in simply being there for people who appreciate it.

Great job. Hope you enjoy it with these people 🪷
Reject · 26-30, M
@HannahSky I do! This may be the best job I’ve ever had. Of course there’s problem residents and other aspects of this job that can be very emotionally draining, but those moments when you can make them smile or help them out in some other small way they appreciate. That makes it all worth it.
HannahSky · F
@Reject they need support
saintsong · 41-45, F
I hope that it's just as theraputic for you as it is for them, and that you all enjoy the work you do! I have a therapist who takes me to the lake every Tuesday afternoons and it's my hope she enjoys it just as much as I do, because it's a hard job dealing with people.
Reject · 26-30, M
@saintsong In a way it certainly is therapeutic for me too! ! I think it’s genuine that makes us do the harder things in life. So I think your therapist, especially having her profession, very much enjoys those lakeside visits with you. ♥

@ThreeLittleBirds I’m lucky to have them too I think. Working here I’ve come to realize just how much I’ve missed having people I can be there for.
