Off to the ER…Why can’t something go right for me

I found out last week I am severely anemic and if I don’t get my iron up I will need a blood transfusion.

I started an iron supplement last Wednesday and it was making my stomach cramp so badly. I was experiencing some itching as well.

I thought it was the supplement just being hard on my stomach so I got one that was easy to tolerate and was at the max dose of 150mg per day which the doctor wanted me to take.

Well the cramping was still bad, I woke up itchy. I started to flush, experiencing itchiness all over, tingling on my hands in feet and difficulty breathing. I took an allergy pill and called Health links and the nurse said I need to go to the ER. It’s not open until 8am because of a nursing shortage.

I can’t drive myself to the next town, I only have 20 more minutes to wait before it opens. I would just like something to go right for once.

The doctor gave me another allergy med in the ER and I got to go home. He thinks the reaction was to the first supplement I was taking. He told me to take nothing for a week and then start that second supplement in a week. I am just really tired from the allergy meds. The itching has stopped and I can breathe fine now.

Our ER is only open Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm due to a Nursing shortage so I will be taking it to be sure I can be seen at the ER here because I would have to go to another town otherwise.

@iamonfire696 I also wanted to mention that some supplements that are supposed to help with immunity also will trigger autoimmune conditions. I was taking spirulina supplements to help detox and give me energy and I believe now that it triggered the psoriasis. I didn’t know it till after i got healed and read that anyone with autoimmune problems (I have rheumatoid arthritis) should avoid taking it. Also rooibos tea can do it because it helps strengthen the immune system. It is sometimes put in some other flavors of tea that are sold by various herbal tea companies.

Reading this post I have a cure for you
Drink 400ml off Guinness a day
I promise that the iron levels will come back up in your body without having to take iron tablets
My daughter had the same problem when she was pregnant
She was anemic and couldn't take iron tablets and taking the Guinness for a month her iro levels went way up
We might talk again sometime ❤️

@antonioioio You know... If alcohol poses no problem, this is great advice. We used to call it "a pork chop in every bottle." It the greatest stuff on earth and it really can help with iron levels. Nothing to lose and you'll be in excellent condition for St. Patrick's Day.

Best thoughts. It feels like forever, but you'll be seen and this will be resolved. There are other ways to maintain a good iron level for you. Rest, relax and trust.

@iamonfire696 My partner is the same way. All her life she's struggled with anemia despite all measures. I know it can be so troublesome.

If I need an iron supplement I get one that is very gentle on my digestive system and it has raspberry extract in it to help absorb the iron better.

Sorry you are having such a terrible reaction.

Also, when I was anemic about 15 years ago it was due to the lipstick I was using having been contaminated with lead. After they stopped selling it i stopped being anemic and then found it listed on a consumer testing list of lipsticks found to have lead.

@cherokeepatti I got one that was gentle on the stomach yesterday and I woke up today because I was having a hard time breathing, itchy all over, my whole body was flushing, numbness in my hands and feet and stomach cramps.

On the other one I was having the stomach cramps and some itchiness.

Iron deficiencies are terrible.
The supplement pills seem worse.

That's a tough road for a bit because of the nature of Iron. Too much is vary bad and too little is very bad.

I imagine they'll be looking into your kidneys and trying to see if they can determine a root cause. Many times it ends up being a more simple thing that they can control through diet and less harsh versions of an iron supplement. I hope that's the case for you.

Either way, keep your head up because life can be kind when you least expect it.

Do some research, some vegetables can help absorb iron better, and some supply more iron but don't necessarily help absorption.

@cherokeepatti Stinging nettles should be in every garden! I know the name sounds dreadful, and it can be a potent itch, but it's so tasty and it has so many health benefits.🌱

@UnderLockDown It is one of the healthiest of all weeds. I haven’t seen any of it growing around here but probably does. I know it did in Missouri in the lot next to my uncle’s house. I would walk by and grab it and then get itching under my fingernails for about an hour after.

@Lilymoon it’s absolute crap. I was close to calling the ambulance this morning though. I couldn’t drive myself to the next town but once I took the allergy med I could breathe again but the nurse was worried about what would happen when the allergy med wore off.

@iamonfire696 I hope it’s alright. I recently was told I was anemic too and what’s strange is they tested me last year for some Mediterranean thing that causes very high iron. You know how it goes, it just never ends!

Btw, our migraine shot can do what the iron pills do according to my Dr. Maybe that’s why the pain was so bad, it was like double time?

@UpForItNow Nice wishes. But just to be clear (and not that you implied this) - being vegan does not necessarily mean transfusions and vitamin deficiencies. A vegan can be a well-known pro athlete. 🙂

I've just read this, omg. Hope you're feeling better. I was severely anemic due to Colitis and had a 4 pint transfusion. The Ferrous Sulphate to try and get my readings higher didn't help. Without enough blood in you, you're going to feel drained and if it gets too low you would collapse. So I hope everything is starting to go in the right direction and things are starting to go right for once for you.

I will only be doing that while our ER is open though. Right now it’s only Monday-Friday from 8am to 8pm because we have a nursing shortage.

Now I am dealing with post covid syndrome too. I am just tired of everything. I hope you are okay 💖.
