This reminds me of CS Lewis' book "The Screwtape Letters". A senior devil, Screwtape, is giving advice to his protégé about how to lead his assigned human into perdition. He give advice like, "Make sure he prays for the state of his mother's soul, but not for the state of her rheumatism."
