Forced marriage is illegal in the UK.
An arrangement where all are happy is still legal but not if one party is marrying against their will. Also taking a UK citizen to another country to force marriage is illegal too.

@SW-User Arranged marriage is not a forced marriage. It is stupid to categorise, like that.
In arranged marriages consensus of all those involved is taken and proceeded.

@Vimala I stated "An arrangement where all are happy" is fine but...
We wouldn't need the law if all arrangements were unforced. The unit wouldn't be so busy if there was no forced marriage.
Nearly 1,200 possible forced marriage cases were flagged up to a specialist service last year, figures show.
Of the 1,196 reports handled by the government’s Forced Marriage Unit (FMU), more than a quarter involved victims below the age of 18, while one in five related to male victims.
The total number of cases registered in 2017 was down by 19% on the previous year, but officials said the fall did not represent a decrease in prevalence of forced marriage in the UK.

I believe that, in the United States, it is only practised in small, insular pockets of imported culture or religion. Some orthodox Jewish communities have been known to try to practice it, and some pockets of Indian and Muslim culture living here also attempt to practice it.

@Princesssharma Apparently he hadn't implemented his plan yet. Thankfully someone took care of that for us, and our female children are a little safer.

No it’s not a thing here. Maybe among immigrant communities but it’s seriously frowned upon.
nedkelly · 61-69, M
Arranged marriages - I do agree with this at all, I feel sorry for the female
calicuz · 56-60, M
No, it's a free for all here in the West
Princesssharma · 31-35, F
@calicuz meaning date experience move in and marry right??
SW-User
@Princesssharma yes though not necessarily in that order
indyjoe · 56-60, M
@Princesssharma I personally believe in putting the 'marry' before the 'move in' part...but you have the right idea.
indyjoe · 56-60, M
It is not common practice, it is not even a concept liked or believed in. However it is not something totally absent from western and European cultures...it was practiced among royalty and nobility centuries ago and may even remotely still be done today.
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
We don't even do arranged marriages here in the South of Africa except for certain Indian communities.
I have never heard of it happening anytime recently. I know men buy brides tho.
Murmurs · 31-35, F
Not really (barring perhaps some smaller immigrant communities to an extent, the majority culture certainly doesn't).
OTOH tinder/etc is using computer algorithms to set up dates, some of which do lead to marriage/long-term relationships. Isn't that a love-life being arranged too?

Princesssharma · 31-35, F
@Murmurs umm yes buts it's one in one and not the entire family involving to decide who we marry
Murmurs · 31-35, F
@Princesssharma How many people wrote the tinder app?!
I agree though, it's "arranged" (arguably) but very different form two families making such decisions or offering such advice.

@Princesssharma Of course most if not all people would like to have the acceptance/approval/blessing of their family on their choice of a life partner and mate, that is only natural. But yes, the choice should be theirs and theirs alone. That's how I see it anyway.
rfhh1959 · 61-69, M
I work for an India company and that is the only country that I am aware that still does arranged marriage
Is your engagement arranged?

alan20 · M
Not that I'm aware of. My mother would have liked to arrange mine on the basis of no woman being good enough, but failed.
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
Some places in eastern Europe I believe... But generally no... We make our own mistakes ;)
Princesssharma · 31-35, F
@ozgirl512 understood that😁
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
@Princesssharma nothing like being in love to trot out the mistakes lol
Success · 26-30, F
Some westerners do. I let my best friend arrange my marriage to her cousin. I was right to trust her judgment.
Miram · 31-35, F
Don't go for it. It's stupid, be assertive and don't make compromises.
Kevin19 · 22-25, M
Nope! It’s extremely rare and at times illegal in the USA!

Very rarely they follow 😊
DarkXtecy · 36-40, M
I think even in common places where it used to be practiced, it's fading away slowly.
DarkXtecy · 36-40, M
@Princesssharma it may seem that way, but the way media has turned things up, I doubt that it will go on for long in near future....it's just my observation, I could be wrong.
