Why does Facebook show when a post is edited?

If you leave a comment on Facebook, and then edit the comment for spelling or content, the message that eventually posts says that the original comment was edited. If you click the message you can see both versions.

What would be the purpose in this? I've thought about it and can't get a handle on what the benefit is to either Facebook or the community.

let's say i wrote a comment that read "i think chocolate is a great ice cream flavor" then someone chimes in "OMG I SO AGREE!" you could turn around and edit your message to read "i think hitler was an underrated hero" it would make whoever agreed with you look like a racist asshat too...

And since my work email is down you've just given me something to do for the next 15 minutes. :)

Bingo. Trolling ...lmao

I didn't know that but I am thinking it's so somebody can't abuse the privilege of editing. That's all I can think of.
I think it's dumb though. It's your post. You should be able to edit it. Nobody has to like it . I say that because I edit on Facebook too.

@Iamnolongerhere: Totally agree.
To remind us of our past mistakes/typos lol

Seems a little harsh. :)
@Ynotisay: haahahahaha tru. Now that you've mentioned it, I wonder now what purpose it serves 😰

@Dewmsberry: See? It makes NO sense. I rarely comment on Facebook because comments go out to people on your Friends list and I'm way too private. I've written Facebook a few times about it and don't get responses. There MUST be a reason.

Because weirdos on facebook edit their comments while arguing to make other look badly...basically the whole concept was implemented due to trolling.
