Why does Facebook show when a post is edited?

If you leave a comment on Facebook, and then edit the comment for spelling or content, the message that eventually posts says that the original comment was edited. If you click the message you can see both versions.

What would be the purpose in this? I've thought about it and can't get a handle on what the benefit is to either Facebook or the community.

Seems a little harsh. :)
@Ynotisay: haahahahaha tru. Now that you've mentioned it, I wonder now what purpose it serves 😰

@Dewmsberry: See? It makes NO sense. I rarely comment on Facebook because comments go out to people on your Friends list and I'm way too private. I've written Facebook a few times about it and don't get responses. There MUST be a reason.
