Why does Facebook show when a post is edited?

If you leave a comment on Facebook, and then edit the comment for spelling or content, the message that eventually posts says that the original comment was edited. If you click the message you can see both versions.

What would be the purpose in this? I've thought about it and can't get a handle on what the benefit is to either Facebook or the community.

I didn't know that but I am thinking it's so somebody can't abuse the privilege of editing. That's all I can think of.
I think it's dumb though. It's your post. You should be able to edit it. Nobody has to like it . I say that because I edit on Facebook too.
