Why do you think the rates of teen depression and suicide are out of control now?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this month reported that suicide rates among American middle school students – those aged 10 to 14 – were higher than rates of death from motor vehicle crashes in that age group.
What is causing this new epidemic?
I'm sure I'll get a bunch of flack for saying this, but I think it's that kids aren't being taught to deal with life. Things like bullying aren't anything new. I endured a lot of it when I was in school. Kids can be mean, that's life. I'm not saying there's any excuse for things like bullying. It is a problem that needs to be addressed. Back when I was 10 years old I don't think suicide was on the radar near as much as it is now. Maybe because it wasn't constantly being talked about. Kind of like an out of sight, out of mind deal.

Everyone is a winner, means you don't have to deal with anything cuz you are a special snowflake.
@curiosi: Everyone is a winner, until real life shows up and they actually lose and have no idea what to do.

I definitely agree with you about bullying.
Bullies have always existed and now they have these programs where they want kids to report bullies. The problem is that statistically bullies are never going to change, so treating them is fruitless.
They should be concentrating their efforts on teaching victims ways to cope!

they wake up one day and realize no one has taught them shit about how to deal with life

Perfectly summarized

Simple, yet well put! 👍
What happens when you wrap a generation in cotton wool and give awards for spelling your name right.
We was all taught life is tough and shit happens. Roll with the punches.
Today's kids are promised everything and taught to pout and tantrum if they don't get the results...

More lefties mean bigger voting pool.
@curiosi: I must get my hands on just a few of these magic money trees democrats say they have and their voters believe exist....

@theoneyouwerewarnedabout: You don't have to do that. I'll tell you exactly where the money trees are. In overseas bank accounts of the ultra wealthy who dodge taxes. And the company owners which produce massive amounts of passive income on the backs of workers, by doing nothing but having money in the first place.

If that's not a fuckin' money tree, I don't know what is.

Because the 'family' is gradually becoming extinct, and the media and everything are just pushing to many things at young people and leaving them confused and frustrated with life. Not to talk of his society is setting contradicting, impossible expectations for younger people
Tatsumi · 31-35, M
Impossible expectations such as what?
Tatsumi · 31-35, M
Because life is pain, but parents teach children that it's not. So, kids are unprepared for the harsh reality. Over-sheltering. Like jumping into a cold pool; it's a shock to the system, and some can't handle it. They're not taught sufficient coping mechanisms to endure and work past the pain.
Cause for the last few decades people have been raised to have unrealistic expectations about what makes then successful and it gets shoved in our faces everyday how much better off other people are, whether it's financial, looks or whatever. Society is basically set up to make most people feel like failures in some sense.

I like this answer and I agree with a lot that you have to say. There is now so much pressure on kids that didn't exist when I was younger. I see it with my own teen daughters.
When I was young, porn was not easily accessible to the boys. They might have been lucky if they stole a porn mag or two from their dad, but that is about it. Now at the click of a button, all of these young kids can see whatever their heart desires.
It's not right that these kids are growing up far before their time. There is so much pressure for them to be like how all of these things on the Internet and social media, etc. portray. It is just too much for them to handle! 😕

While bad parenting is part of the problem so is the amount of chemicals that we are exposed to. It all messes with your brain.
NineLives · 41-45, F
That is so very true. Also our junk food diet is not doing anyone any favors!
Society is sick.
