I don't think it's selfish but why waste the money on a gift card just spend the cash on yourself

I don't see it as selfish, if he had the cash he'd probably spend it on bills or food, this way he's ensuring he has to buy himself something he may not have treated himself to otherwise.
Why is it selfish to treat yourself or reward yourself?

Well a gift card is for what ever reason the person what’s to do with it. I mean they are paying for it so they can do what ever they want with it. Now why they had to buy a gift card instead of just treating themselves to something. I do not know.

What's the point? If you want to buy something, you could just go buy it rather than a card. Cut out the middleman, so to speak. Unless it's a budget thing.
