Yes
I know a whole bunch ...
They don’t say one race is better than the other but they do believe they should not mix
“ because they are so different “🙄

The most racist people are the ones projecting their racism on anyone who doesn't lock step with them. It's sickening.

Most people are. Imo. And yes this is through experience.
When I first met my gf, her mother told me about a negro she knew. She used the word negro. Her dad said he wanted to get a chinky from the Chinese. Yes chinky. I got asked by a work colleague are muslims cancelling Christmas.
So yes.

Everyone is a bit racist, in my experience. All humans are tribal in nature, and racism is an offshoot of that. Actually it's usually more an assessment of likely cultural values than race with most people. The line between being a nazi and being moronically blind to real traits closely associated various races/cultures is whether it makes you treat strangers in ways that increase or decrease intolerance in the world

Yes, makes sense. The way race is discussed is quite misleading really, people associate it with skin color and good/bad judgments. But it's about tribal affiliations, and those are actually pretty colourblind, as anyone who has formed bonds with others through hardship can attest. I always point to the example of Japan, a very racially homogenous island for centuries, and did that bring them peace? Hell no, it was one clan vs another to the death, that's what tribalism can do to humans fighting over resources, race is just a smokescreen.

@plungesponge It kind of hurts me when black people say to me, "Don't try and say you know anything about the black experience" Granted my skin is white I don't get "shade" by passersby, but I was in the middle of the Watts riots, had to run for safety, and my best friend EVER died too early on and I still grieve. Way too much assumptions on both sides and I don't have an answer.

The only way people can see past their racial assumptions is when they come to know you personally. Unfortunately racism often also shuts down the opportunity to know anyone personally. There are real cultural and even racial differences in the human species that exist as big blurry blobs, but within those blobs is a huge amount of variation and there's a hell of a lot of overlap between the blobs.
To see the blobs as completely separate entities is dumb, just as pretending the blobs don't exist is also dumb. The secret is being able to be aware of the blobs while giving as much chance as possible that the individual you're dealing with is part of a blob that overlaps with your part of your blob.

If tolerance is not taught at home, the children will adopt the attitudes of their parents, not because they believe but because its what they were taught.
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@Quimliqer 100% this.

I think it is so ingrained that they do not see it as racist. The amount of times people i know have just blurted our some racist comment and then realise I am there and back track by saying "but I don't mean you" .... but yes you do!
JovialPlutonian · 36-40, M
@InOtterWords it’s crazy, I knew someone that was openly racist but really got on with the Sri Lankan shop keeping. He’d just say he’s ok though. I don’t know how you could right so many ppl off because of their skin colour it’s so primitive
InOtterWords · F
@Gangstress I have been doing it a lot recently
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@InOtterWords same mate.
NeuroticByNature · 41-45, F
yes and it doesn't matter what your race is you can be racist.
Rhodesianman · 56-60, M
Its true there is a certain amount of racism in everyone .
The one thing I dont believe in is mixed race relationships .Whether that makes me racist I dont know , but the reason being is I have seen first hand the misery mixed race kids go through at school .A friend we knew had mixed race boys and were the same age as my kids went to the same school .They were treated badly not only by other kids but some of the staff as well .So much so I actually got one teacher fired for abusing one of the boys .
If your going to enter into a mixed relationship please think before having kids , because sadly racism is alive and thriving in the UK and USA .

@Rhodesianman thats mainly because one half of that couple may not understand their child and that's lack of care and thought. Parents need to be held accountable for having sex without consequences. The consequence being your child will hate you coz they have no clue how to deal with it
VeronicaPrincess · 61-69
I think there's a lot of that. We all make assumptions about people we don't even know, and the persons' race can be one of the factors used in those assumptions. It's one of the shortcomings of our species. 😔
RubySoo · 56-60, F
I think a lot of people say inapropriate things, unaware they could be considered racist. But i feel they possibly dont mean them in an offensive way.
I think back to hiw my own parents refered to people of colour.....and their words woukd surely come across as racist in todays world. Yet neither of them had any issues with the people at all. My dad had a good friend who was a coloured man.
He was actualky known as 'Darkie' by everybody locally...as shocking as that sounds now.

More often than not, I think a person can know they are but they either deny it or make excuses for it.

Absolutely. It's not surprising given that we're all arguably pretty strongly socially conditioned and their are values that seem to be embedded and have been for generations, without questions, including prejudices about race.
