I realise this is an old post, and the 2020 fires in Australia were significant and tragic, but this "picture" isn't really a picture. That should be blatantly obvious to anyone, as it was to me instantly. It's a "visualisation" of many fires over a period of time, in this case basically an intensity map projected onto a satellite image of Australia.
