Why is common core math better?

I honestly want to know. My oldest was in grade school when it started. I’ve been through all three of my kids now and it’s still baffling to me.

I honestly don't know a lot about it, but from what little I do, it seems to be more about teaching techniques to get an answer rather than just "here, memorize these times tables."

I remember when I was learning multiplication, that was literally all we got. Just memorization. They never taught me WHY 5 x 5 was 25. I even asked my teacher. Her answer was "It just is". Luckily, I figured it out myself.

So, in simpler terms, they're learning more about the actual math?

@SarahAndSamantha IT doesn't teach the easier techniques. Well they still do, but they frown on them and gloss over them.

The results after years have spoken as well. Students are even worse than when Common core was implemented . Scores have been going down.

We were taught exactly what was going on what the numbers were doing while being taught standard algorithm.

@MethDozer Don't get me wrong, I think a balance between the two would be ideal. Teach the memorization and the easy way, but also teach the 'why'. If I had been taught the why instead of just left to figure it out, I would've learned it a lot quicker.

@SarahAndSamantha It isn't like standard algorithm is about memorization. The only wrote learning involved math was the times table with was taught a long with the proper standard algorithm for multiplication.

From.my understanding from.talking to teachers and educators the whole e point of common core math was to try and teach it to the bottom 2% of students who couldn't grasp the basic concepts. At the cost of the kids with pliable minds. It was about try to teach that one dummy we had in class who couldn't grasp anything.

It's not -- but "educators" make a living off coming up with new wonky concepts to foist on the schools.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@ChipmunkErnie And cut out the parents from educating their children
FORMERLYbatovn · 61-69, M
Common core is an attempt to dumb done the masses even more. Its in the top 5 of the stupid idea ever put into practice......
It's not. My eldest goes "mum your way is so easy..why do I have to do it the hard way?"
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@MethDozer LOL, ya mean cutting the parents out of the loop

All three of mine were the same! I honestly felt sorry for them. I was too confused on how teach them to show the work I’d write notes to school all the time making sure they still got credit for their homework because we tried! The outcome was always right. @Snowvixen
@LittleBittyPretty1 that's awesome! Math has never been my strongest subject so when I tried there way I got more confused and said the hell with it.. I'm doing it this way 🤣

Common core: Dumbing down, ridiculous and just plain Marxist indoctrination of the young masses. Oh, but wait, climate change is more important than a good and preparing education. Who would have known🤔
Oster1 · M
@MethDozer Try to get your education expenditures back. I am trying to be polite. There is no real value in debating you. I really am not fond of your attitude or aptitude. Please, go try to impress someone else. It’s just not working on my end:)

I got nothing to back the BS up.

Very true and most honest statistics have come to the same conclusion:)@IstillmissEP
NiftyWhite · 46-50, F
The old math is better. I’m a teacher and new math just confuses the kids even more.
JimminyChristmas · 56-60, M
That is just beyond stupid!!
Oster1 · M
I could not agree more:)@JimminyChristmas

Part of learning math is coming up with ways to solve problems faster on your own. If you force a method, it's nothing more than rote memorization.
missionfigdeluxe · 61-69, M
I use a slide rule get best answers calculators are bad.
Is this kindergarten level math?
LittleBittyPretty1 · 46-50, F
I’m not sure on this specific clip but they do start it in early elementary school. @TheOneyouwerewarnedabout
I saw that the other day. So stupid
HannahSky · F
What is it exactly?
MethDozer · M
It isn't. Its just more convoluted and inefficient. Honestly it just confuses kids from what I've seen.

Retarded AF

Agreed@MethDozer
LittleBittyPretty1 · 46-50, F
And.. if the argument is on teaching them techniques or to explain why you get the outcome when say multiplying they’re still missing the mark. Listen to how she explains zeros lol. @MethDozer @LittleBittyPretty1
