Why do people get annoyed when they are asked what are their preferred pronouns?

Ive just started college and in seminar the lecturer asked us to introduce ourselves and what are our prefered pronouns. Several of the students got snarky at this and rolled their eyes and scoffed. Why? Its just polite to do what you can to make sure you don't offend people.

One of the great life lessons I was taught was by a psychologist who argued against "Treat everyone as you would like to be treated" replacing it with "Treat everyone how they want to be treated"

So I'm with you no assumptions and ask people how they like to be referred as etc.

@SW-User That's such a great way to put it, I've never thought of it that way.

@SarahAndSamantha @SarahAndSamantha it was one of those "Aha" moments in life. Its so true. But of course requires you to ask.... And much more difficult to actually listen to the answers
