Why do people get annoyed when they are asked what are their preferred pronouns?

Ive just started college and in seminar the lecturer asked us to introduce ourselves and what are our prefered pronouns. Several of the students got snarky at this and rolled their eyes and scoffed. Why? Its just polite to do what you can to make sure you don't offend people.
I suppose to some it is too PC.

One of the great life lessons I was taught was by a psychologist who argued against "Treat everyone as you would like to be treated" replacing it with "Treat everyone how they want to be treated"

So I'm with you no assumptions and ask people how they like to be referred as etc.

@SW-User That's such a great way to put it, I've never thought of it that way.

@SarahAndSamantha @SarahAndSamantha it was one of those "Aha" moments in life. Its so true. But of course requires you to ask.... And much more difficult to actually listen to the answers

probably because instead of being a place of learning and education it seems Colleges are nothing but a cesspool of SJW Activists.

its not about being against lgbt agendas. its wanting to get my degree without having to deal with agendas.

It might have to do with being asked when they feel they shouldn't be?
I don't know.

If this is a college class that is ALL about such a topic, then I'm not sure.

I don't want to come off as offensive if I say certain things...

I do sometimes wonder how we are going to remedy this issue when males look and Sound like females and females look and Sound like males but, neither identify as such. I know I can't be able to not offend at some point. I don't want to offend.
I think there is going to have to be some leeway. One cannot claim discrimination based on innocent ignorance.

I can barely memorize a name. I’m not going to bother memorizing secondary attributes.

If there is that much of an issue with pronouns, I just won’t bother using them with you and I’ll hopefully just use your name.

I have to say this, I know many in the LGBTQ+ community have made way to making this a conversation, I find them inclusive in conversation. Its the push back, which I don't understand.

why would it offend people it always baffles me. giving a wrong pronoun it's not an insult. it's just a wrong turn on the phrase.

Maybe they don't know what they are
