When your father dies, do you become a bastard? or only kids that are born without a father can be bastards?

SW-User
I think that men who refuse to parent their child are the bastards.
CharlieZ · 70-79, M
@SW-User Right
Nobody gets born without a 'father' of some description - even if the father is only sperm in a test tube.

In the past, a bastard was a child born to parents who weren't married to each other. Today that's no longer very significant, and the term is mostly used to cause emotional pain or to describe someone who does bad things to others.

The death of a parent (or usually both parents) makes someone an orphan, not a bastard. Unless they do bad things to others.

@Mamapolo2016 Could u become an orphan at 50?
@Dan193 Yes, if one or both parents die. It doesn't carry the same connotation as it does when a young child's parents die, but it's still being orphaned.

And it often feels that way, regardless of the child's age. "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child."
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@Mamapolo2016 Thank you, I didn't know that.

All children have fathers (except for clones). However, some mothers don't have husbands, and THEIR children are bastards. It used to be a big deal in the Middle Ages. Bastards were not allowed to inherit unless legally adopted by their fathers, and bastards were not allowed to enter a church, therefore they could not marry legally.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@4meAndyou thanks, that was interesting 🤔
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@4meAndyou Oh wow, interesting fact.
Kids born out of wedlock are bastards.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@GohantheThird alright
Melpomene · 22-25, F
Nope.
A bastard is a person born of parents not married to each other, illegitimate child.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@Melpomene Ohh... so they could be living together, but not married? or the father needs to be absent all together?
Melpomene · 22-25, F
@Dan193 Dunno, I guess it's a yes for both. I believe it's kinda archaic using ''bastard'' to describe a child.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@Melpomene I see.
Platinum · M
Once your father is part of your life then he is always with you even after death and you will never be a bastard
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@Platinum That's a thought provoking way to put it.
You become an orphan not a bastard.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
there are only 2 ways that I know of to be a bastard: if you're mom doesn't know who your dad is OR by being really disrespectful to others
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@reflectingmonkey Thanks, this makes it clear.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@Dan193 actually, after reading a few answers, I think the ones that say bastard is a child conceived outside of marriage are more right. but definitely being disrespectful to others is also another way to be a bastard.
SW-User
No child is a bastard only negligent adults. Children are all gifts.
SW-User
If I had listened to my mother and other old assholes id be called a bastard. She called me that more than my name. So my ass broke it down for her . You were the slut that didn’t keep your legs closed . I am just a child . So back your stupid ass up.
Lol then I probably got my own ass beat but still. Im feisty ;)@Dan193
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@SW-User Yeah, I wish people wouldn't have kids while they're still practically kids themselves. So they could be at least somewhat responsible for them. And it's alright, I got beatings too.
SW-User
Xxxx I’m sorry. Mine wasn’t even too young. Just her brain was . Limited. @Dan193
Dan193 · 31-35, M
