Starbucks withdraws single use plastic straws in a bid to counter plastic pollution and replaces them with paper straws...

wrapped in a single use plastic wrapper.

LyricsKeepMeBreathing · 31-35, M
Maybe Starbucks should just create a new kind of cup that doubles as a way to drink it without the need of a straw.
LyricsKeepMeBreathing · 31-35, M
@Elandra77 that's a shame that it costs more to produce that though. Honestly I could do without a straw altogether if need be.
Glossy · F
@LyricsKeepMeBreathing I think that's what's called a "cup".

they actually think it will cut down on people who use them to crush pills and then use them to snort the powder ,
the paper ones have a wax on them
Guess no one told them they were using dollar bills long before straws
but it is easier to crush them and then reuse a plastic straw than a bill
rckt148 · 61-69, M
@nonsensiclesnail well they plainly said on the news here they are doing it to cut down on the opioid abuse and deaths
Most major cities now have freezer trucks filled with bodies they can't process there are so many of them
Overdose ,murder and suicide ,
they made me have a Narcan script on file this month to fill my pain meds
New law that went into effect June 1st ,,
The VA is only supplying pain meds for short term care ,and cancer patients
They are making some patients in civilian clinics fill 10 days
then get a new script for 10 days ,and so on
My Doctor has to justify with DEA and the CDC why I am on long term narcotics
my condition is printed on my script .
and it is a separate felony for each pill you are in possession of without a script for them
There is a war on pain meds ,,and I am usually one of the victims
I will need them the rest of my life ,and people who abuse them just keep making it harder and harder
They can now make straws that look like plastic and plates and cups too
that will break down in a matter of days if it ends up in constant sunlight
as with litter .
I assume soon that will be the way they go
So you are saying that someone out there is claiming that getting rid of straws is going to curb the opioid abuse?
rckt148 · 61-69, M
@nonsensiclesnail yes ,and it is a reusable tool
They put the pill in the straw ,crush it with a lighter ,dump it onto a surface or just hit it ,put the straw back in their pocket for reuse ,
so I see its like a pipe to smoke weed ,but all they do is make them go back to a bill
thats not stopping people who snort from snorting
they also us straws when smoking Oxys and tar heroin ,so yes
they think it removes one more tool to abuse drugs

I ain't paying for one cup of coffee when I can get a whole can of it for a couple bucks more has always been my beef with Starbucks and other high
priced coffee places.
I don't need desinger coffee.
But, yes that's pretty dumb.
It's like some of the vegans who wear leather shoes???
You just null and voided your own protest.
rckt148 · 61-69, M
@SW-User I had a friends (who has now passed away )
Who imported fresh beans from all over the world .
Every morning he was roasting them and baking all kinds of fluffy crusted pastries that were so melt in you're mouth goodness .
It was a tiny place with a huge parking lot that we made fun of when we first met Bill
He was from Miami opening a coffee shop on main street Hendersonville NC
He hired my brother and I to do some remodeling work ,and one of the perks of the job was trying out different blends of coffee and different pastries .
I was soon hooked on real hazelnut and a cherry turnover .
The business grew until he needed to buy the business next door too for the space and it was still a line on the street and standing room only .
He has a few real espresso /capachino machine ,the huge tall shiny brass machines with Eagles on top ,and all of them had burn scars from not knowing how to operate the machine right at first .
after my friend passed away everyone tried making me all types of garbage that was suppose to taste like hazel nut from flavored coffees to creamers
the smell of it brewing gave me a headache ,there was no comparison .
French Vanilla too ,I hate the smell of all the imitations .
For a treat yourself reward for a hard days work ,nothing was like Bill's
Starbucks has nothing on it or any of the other ones that have popped up since .
Huge burlap bags of beans ,the special ovens for roasting them ,the blends
and his chief style pastries ,its was a treat worth paying for
But I have not had anything that comes close since ,
A lot of my lady friends blamed me for the extra pounds too
for getting them hooked on Bills pastries
They said the same thing in the beginning ,"No way is coffee worth $2,50 per cup when I can buy a whole bag of 8 oclock beans for just a few dollars more"
It was funny when I popped in ,and caught them there
"Its you're fault ,you got us hooked "
May Bill rest in peace ,I am not the only one who misses him ,or his coffee
The Vegetarians I know were raised that way ,they never eat meat in their lives ,but they are that way for health reasons ,and all of them are supper healthy , and now they kind of have proof as to why

And yes, the plastic wrapping on the paper straw is sort of a face palm... i mean really. Why not a paper wrapper with the same pattern as the straw so people still get the idea of what they are picking up.
*sigh* who does their product design?

@RodneyTrotter I think so. In fixing one of the many ways plastics interfere with sea and wildlife, they are still adding to the plastic problem in our seas. I may have to drive past their headquarters and glare at it.

As an avid Starbucks drinker, you do know they’re flavor straws right? For people who drink plain or black coffee. The straws are lined with sugar and various types of flavorings.

This is literally fake news 😂
rckt148 · 61-69, M
@TonyPajamas I said I am in Florida ,I have no clue about other states only mine
The local news here said it was just another way of stopping people who snort drugs from using straws as a way to introduce drugs into the system .
Lots of people I know of do prefer to snort narcotics as to take them by mouth .

I do know people that put the pill in the straw ,crush it with a lighter
and snort it right from the straw ,put the straw back in their pocket to reuse it .
If a police officer finds a straw in a car that has been shortened I know they test it to see if its been used with drugs .

Now days a Paraphernalia charge can be more severe than for the drugs its used to introduce them into the body with ,,Like papers and no tobacco ,or a pipe or stem with residue .
Here they are very serious when it comes to narcotics ,
I suffer from a bone disease and I suffer chronic pain ,I am on narcotics
But now days it takes an act of congress to get them ,and being caught with them and no script ,the penalty now is severe .

So when the news said the ending of the use of plastic straws over it ,seemed silly
since people have been using rolled up dollar bills long before I seen a straw used ,and I have been around snorters and bangers my whole life .

But I get when you have freezer trucks full of bodies you can't process fast enough from overdose ,if you can save one ,I get it
What I don't get ,is since they are so hard to get now ,how so many are still on the streets to begin with
My diagnosis is on my script ,and they are making them harder to fill
Fewer doctors will even prescribe them
and now I have to have a Narcam script on file just to fill them and my name is in a national data base .
I don't see straws cutting down on abuse ,but that is the reason the news here gave for ending the use of reusable straws ,to help curb them being used to snort narcotics
Starbucks is only one place here no longer using them
Now I hear the reason is over pollution ,I believe the reason the news gave
To end snorters being able to use them to snort pills ,
Like having papers and no rolling tobacco ,maybe soon just having a plastic straw that has been shortened will be a crime too ,if it has residue or not
have a good day
They have straws made out of a cookie too ,even in bars for mixed drinks
I am told they are made from something that has no taste and break down in a land fill ,,so I am sure some of it does also have to do with pollution
Now there is a war starting over cigarette butts too ,the number 1 thing as litter ,,I personally think we have waited to long to become eko friendly
There is no where on earth you can go now and not see the trash man has left behind ,I would say beer bottles and can's rank right up there
I know a man who makes a pretty good living picking up cans

Not true this was last June.

Seattle is believed to be the first major U.S. city to ban single-use plastic straws and utensils in food service, according to Seattle Public Utilities. The eco-conscious city has been an environmental leader in the U.S., working to aggressively curb the amount of trash that goes into landfills by requiring more options that can be recycled or compos

I’m talking about the straws in the specific picture. They are flavored straws @Like2play

Seems to be wrapped in about the same amount of plastic as the straw contained.
rckt148 · 61-69, M
@Like2play there is another reason the wants straws removed from their shops
and the new "Plastic " is bio degradable ,it breaks down in a land fill or beside the road ,unlike the normal plastic we are used to that will last forever

It always blew me away ,,a tote I bought to store things in I want to protect
the plastic breaks down ,,especially if exposed for long periods in the sun
But a straw or plastic spork ,the plastic that holds a 6 pack together and Styrofoam will last forever
Why did they not make the straw of out of the crap they made my tote out of
and the tote out of the same plastic they make the straw from ?
Now days park bench's and pic nic tables are made of recycled plastic bags and garbage bags ,,why didn't they make my totes out of that stuff

Nothing make me more mad then to get out one of the totes I paid a higher price for as I wanted to protect the things I was storing in them
And the lid has cracked ,or the handle breaks off in my hand ,and a mouse has chewed a hole in a corner and shredded some of the things inside to build a nest
And the plastic is all brittle and crumbling
But a Styrofoam cup and plate ,,tossed away by a camper will still be in the woods or on an island 20 yrs from now ,,exposed to the sun and elements everyday
and its only a little green from corticolous lichen trying to grow on it
(that grassy looking stuff that grows on trees and rocks )
And on a lighter note here are The Rolling Stones doing their version of the Solomon Burke hit "If You Need Me"

@RodneyTrotter Yes they were. They lacked the energy and rive the Stones have. The e Urgency. They are too "pretty boy" The Stones aren't singing about an Octopus Garden (who cares) and Mean Mister Mustard. OK 2000 light Years is a bit out there.

I think the competition to BE the best made The Stones better as they rose to that challenge-and then kept rocking after women broke up the Beatles. Women??? ReallY? The Stones TAUGHT Fleetwood Mac HOW TO MAC!

@RodneyTrotter Yeah you ;re prop right. Tee shirts for that place can still be had. The Stones owned the Marquis Club (now closed) but that is all but lost to obscurity. The Cavern is like Sun Studies here in Memphis, a tourist trap.

Ober her American TV LIKED the Beatles more. They were SAFE! The Stones had to sing "Let's spend some "mmm" together" instead of Let's spend the night together" What nonsense.

Have these chancers started paying the right amount of tax on their profits yet (without using avoidance tactics?) Plastic straws are triviality compared to that.

I did just Google it and it appears they are 'paying more' it certainly won't be the full amount but at the end of the day the government's responsibilty to get it right. My personal thoughts, 'tax should be paid in the country where the product or service is provided', the UK, France or Morocco if that's where somebody puts coffee to mouth.
They are not free- they cost approx $3 USD.

@RodneyTrotter That’s pretty funny. I knew they were making a big deal about replacing the straws. I did not know they’d be wrapping them in plastic—rather defeats the purpose. 😅

I liked it better in the polytheistic days. Praying to many gods seemed arguably logical.
